Chapter 26 - The cellar becomes boring

Three years after the gala, the mansion underwent renovation.

Not because I wanted to erase the cellar.

Plumbing.

Electrical.

Fire code.

The wine cellar received a new interior-release mechanism and a glass section in the door.

No one could be locked inside without being able to exit.

The service alcove moved.

Foundation inventory no longer entered my private home at all.

Another obvious reform.

Charity property belonged in professional custody.

Not mansion hallways.

The hidden camera was gone.

No need.

Our household security cameras remained only where justified.

No camera aimed into family living spaces.

I refused to let protection become surveillance.

Elowen eventually asked:

“Can I see cellar?”

She was almost nine.

“Why?”

“I want to.”

We went together.

Daylight.

Door open.

Rows of bottles.

Nothing dramatic.

She stood at threshold.

“That blanket gone?”

“Yes.”

“Plates?”

“Yes.”

“Camera?”

“Gone.”

“Marcella?”

“Not here.”

She walked inside.

Touched a wine rack.

Then:

“Smells weird.”

“It’s a wine cellar.”

“Bad.”

“Accurate.”

She lasted three minutes.

Then:

“Can we get ice cream?”

That was it.

No triumph.

May you like

No tears.

A room became a room again.
