Chapter 19 - Marcella’s plea

Marcella pleaded guilty fifteen months after the gala.

One felony child-endangerment/unlawful-restraint count reflecting repeated locked confinement.

One felony theft-related count involving charitable property under the negotiated financial resolution.

Other charges dismissed or merged.

Sentence:

Nine months total custodial exposure under a structured agreement, with six months in county custody and remaining time served through supervised community release depending compliance.

Three years probation.

Restitution to the foundation of $146,000 plus agreed investigative costs capped under settlement.

No direct contact with Elowen during probation absent court approval, therapeutic recommendation, and my consent.

No fiduciary or managerial role in a charitable organization during supervision.

Required behavioral treatment.

No twenty-year prison fantasy.

Still serious.

At sentencing, Marcella said:

“I took property that did not belong to me.”

There.

“I changed records so the removal would look legitimate.”

There.

Then:

“I locked Elowen in the cellar because I wanted her away from places where she had seen things I did not want repeated.”

There.

And:

“Later I also used the cellar because I resented her and because I knew it made her quiet.”

There.

The judge asked:

“Did you intend to physically injure her?”

“No.”

“Did you know she was frightened?”

Marcella cried.

“Yes.”

There.

Intent not to injure did not convert fear into discipline.
