Chapter 10

Carmela had planned more than Paolo understood.

The authorization trail led investigators to her personal trust administrator.

Carmela had moved money three times during the month before Paolo’s trip.

One payment went to Gavin’s wife.

One went to a private intelligence contractor that had tracked Paolo’s travel itinerary.

The third funded legal work.

The guardianship documents.

All three came from Carmela.

Not Talia.

For weeks, everyone had assumed Talia was the driving force because she had the debt, the business motive, and the most to lose professionally.

The evidence showed something different.

Carmela had built the plan.

Talia had participated in it.

Daniel reconstructed the timeline.

Paolo had told his mother he was removing Talia from financial control.

Carmela begged him to reconsider.

He refused.

Then Ava was born.

Paolo announced that the next generation of the Ventresca family would not inherit automatic authority in the business.

To Paolo, that was protecting his daughter.

To Carmela, it meant the family structure she had defended for forty years was dying.

She believed Elise had changed him.

She believed Ava had replaced Talia.

And she believed Paolo was preparing to expose his own sister’s financial misconduct rather than quietly save her.

So Carmela decided to solve everything at once.

The vehicle interference was intended to create a fatal accident on Paolo’s drive home.

Talia provided schedules and access.

Gavin handled the vehicle.

Carmela financed it.

When the tracker stopped, they believed it had worked.

That explained why Carmela told Elise Paolo was dead without confirmation.

It explained why the guardianship paperwork had been prepared beforehand.

It explained Talia’s emergency-succession email.

And it explained their terrified glance when Paolo walked onto the terrace alive.

But the most painful part came from Gavin’s attorney.

Gavin agreed to cooperate.

According to him, Talia had almost backed out.

Three days before Paolo’s trip, she told Carmela the plan had gone too far.

Carmela answered:

“He stopped being my son when he chose that girl over his own blood.”

Paolo read the statement without moving.

His mother had not been manipulated by Talia.

Talia had been manipulated by his mother.

It did not make his sister innocent.

She still helped.

But the center of the betrayal shifted.

The woman Paolo had believed was protecting Talia had actually been willing to sacrifice her own son to preserve the family she thought he was destroying.
