Chapter 9

The conflict spread beyond the estate.

Employees were interviewed.

Company servers were preserved.

The failed Brooklyn development became part of a separate financial review after auditors discovered Talia had routed family-company payments toward vendors connected to her project.

Carmela’s personal guarantee surfaced.

Her motive became easier to understand.

If Paolo removed Talia, the project collapsed.

If the project collapsed, Carmela could lose millions.

Still, motive was not proof she wanted her son dead.

Then Gavin Price changed his story.

He admitted performing unauthorized work on Paolo’s SUV.

He insisted he had not been told to hurt anyone.

“Talia said Mr. Ventresca wanted a security modification that couldn’t appear on the normal invoice.”

“What modification?” investigators asked.

Gavin requested a lawyer.

The interview ended.

Daniel was frustrated.

Paolo was not surprised.

People who had participated in small parts of a larger scheme often protected themselves before they protected truth.

Then the investigator showed Paolo a photograph recovered from Gavin’s phone backup.

It showed the Ventresca SUV inside the shop after hours.

Talia stood beside it.

Another person was visible only from behind.

Gray hair.

Pearl earrings.

Paolo recognized his mother immediately.

Carmela had told investigators she had never visited the shop.

She had lied.

But the larger shock came from Elise.

She studied the photograph longer than Paolo did.

“Those earrings.”

“What?”

“She was wearing them when she told me you were dead.”

Paolo looked again.

Carmela had gone directly from the secret meeting surrounding his vehicle to comforting his supposedly widowed wife weeks later wearing the same familiar jewelry, the same composed expression.

Elise’s voice became smaller.

“She hugged me.”

Paolo turned toward her.

“She told me I had to be strong for Ava.”

For the first time, the betrayal stopped being about what Carmela might have done to Paolo.

It became about what she had done afterward.

She had held Elise while Elise believed her husband was dead.

Then she had tried to make her sign away control over their child.

Paolo was ready to confront his mother.

Daniel stopped him.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because we found who approved Gavin’s payment.”

“Talia?”

Daniel shook his head.

May you like

“No.”

The electronic authorization belonged to Carmela.
