Chapter 11

Paolo did not speak to Carmela for eleven days after learning the truth.

Not because he had nothing to say.

Because he knew exactly what anger could make him do.

The terrace had already shown him that.

Instead, he went to Manhattan.

Ava was asleep in a bassinet beside Elise’s couch.

Paolo sat across from his wife.

“My mother arranged it.”

Elise closed her eyes.

“Talia too?”

“She helped.”

“But Carmela started it?”

“Yes.”

Elise looked toward Ava.

“She held our daughter over a fire after she thought she had killed you.”

Paolo had no explanation.

There was none.

Then Elise asked something harder.

“Why did she hate me that much?”

“She didn’t.”

Elise stared at him.

“She tried to take my baby.”

“I know.”

“She told me you were dead.”

“I know.”

Paolo corrected himself.

“She hated what you represented.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Change.”

Elise almost laughed.

“That’s not better.”

“No.”

Paolo finally confronted his own part.

For years, Carmela had dominated family decisions because Paolo found it easier to let her.

Talia spoke for him at work because it saved time.

Employees feared contradicting them because Paolo rewarded loyalty more than disagreement.

Elise had entered a system built long before she arrived.

When she complained, Paolo expected her to adapt.

“I kept telling you they’d settle down.”

“Yes.”

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

Again, she did not rescue him from the admission.

The practical damage grew.

Talia’s financial misconduct was now documented well enough for the company board to remove her permanently.

Carmela’s lawyers argued that Gavin was lying to reduce his own exposure.

Talia refused to give investigators a complete statement.

Truth existed.

Accountability still required people willing to establish it formally.

Then Talia called Paolo.

Not her attorney.

Not Daniel.

Paolo.

“Mom says Gavin made it up.”

Paolo waited.

Talia’s voice shook.

“She says if I tell them what happened, I’m destroying the family.”

Paolo looked toward Elise and Ava.

“No.”

“What?”

“She already did that.”

Talia began crying.

“What am I supposed to do?”

For the first time, Paolo did not tell his sister what choice to make.

“Tell the truth or don’t.”

May you like

He ended the call.

The decision had to belong to her.
