Chapter 13

Talia’s statement gave investigators the cooperation they had been missing.

It did not erase her role.

Her attorney made sure she understood that.

She provided messages showing Carmela pressuring her to continue when she tried to back away.

She confirmed the payments.

She identified the intelligence contractor.

She also admitted helping prepare the false death story before any accident occurred.

Gavin’s account aligned with hers on the important points.

Independent records supported both.

Daniel organized the corporate evidence separately.

Talia’s unauthorized financial transfers.

The failed development.

The false vendor expenses.

Nothing depended on a single confession.

Paolo also provided the terrace incident statements.

All of them.

Including the part where he punched Talia.

Including the slap he delivered to Carmela.

His attorney warned him.

“You could leave some of that to witness accounts.”

“No.”

“Paolo.”

“They’re going to tell the truth about what they did. So am I.”

That choice surprised Talia when she learned about it.

“You admitted hitting me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because it happened.”

Talia looked at him as if she no longer recognized her brother.

Maybe she did not.

The final evidence came from the travel contractor.

Carmela had requested notification the moment Paolo’s vehicle tracker stopped moving unexpectedly.

She received the alert twelve minutes before telling Elise he was dead.

The contractor’s email clearly stated:

VEHICLE SIGNAL LOST. STATUS UNKNOWN.

Carmela turned “status unknown” into “your husband is dead.”

That distinction mattered.

It showed she was not confused by a false report.

She had used the tracker as confirmation of something she already expected.

Daniel placed the email with the other records.

“They have enough to proceed without another word from her.”

Paolo looked at his mother’s name.

For most of his life, Carmela had believed being Paolo Ventresca’s mother meant the family would close around her whenever danger came.

Now Paolo faced the last version of that expectation.

Protect her.

Or let the consequences move forward without interference.
