Chapter 7

Proof did not arrive as one dramatic discovery.

It arrived as a pattern.

The automotive shop confirmed Talia had personally delivered Paolo’s SUV for the unapproved work.

Phone records showed Carmela called Gavin Price twice that same afternoon.

Gavin’s wife received the thirty-thousand-dollar payment three days later.

Travel records showed Talia changed Paolo’s backup vehicle and reduced his security detail.

Then Daniel found something from the day Paolo supposedly died.

At 11:06 a.m., Carmela sent Talia a text.

HAS IT HAPPENED?

Talia responded seventeen minutes later.

NO WORD YET.

At 12:41:

THE TRACKER STOPPED.

At 1:03, Carmela called Elise into the library.

That was when she told her Paolo had died.

No official report existed.

No hospital had called.

No police department had called.

No member of Paolo’s travel team had reported a crash.

They relied on a stopped tracker.

That same tracker had stopped because Paolo’s disabled SUV was loaded onto a tow truck and its auxiliary power disconnected.

Talia and Carmela had interpreted silence as death.

Paolo read the messages twice.

“Why would they expect a stopped tracker to mean I was dead?”

Daniel did not answer.

He did not need to.

There was another clue.

At 1:18, fourteen minutes after Carmela told Elise, Talia emailed the family’s outside accountants.

The subject line read:

EMERGENCY SUCCESSION.

She asked which signatures would be necessary to maintain company operations if Paolo could no longer act.

Before any death had been confirmed.

Before anyone had even reported an accident.

The pattern no longer looked like panic after tragedy.

It looked like people waiting for an expected event.

Paolo made his decision that evening.

He called state investigators and turned over the vehicle, payment, travel, and communication records.

Daniel warned him that doing so would invite outsiders into Ventresca business records.

“I know.”

“They may look beyond your mother.”

“I know.”

“Beyond Talia.”

“I know.”

Paolo looked toward a photograph of Ava on his desk.

“For once, they can look wherever the facts take them.”

He signed the authorization.

There would be no family settlement now.
