Chapter 12

Anna saved us.
Not with bravery.
With a vacuum cleaner.
That fact would have made Evelyn laugh before all of this.
Eventually it did.
The veil had been under the floor for weeks. Evelyn slowly pushed it through the seam whenever the room above was empty.
She chose the veil because she knew I would recognize the pearl hairpiece.
She did not know whether I ever entered the bridal suite anymore.
I didn’t.
The room had been closed since the wedding.
Bianca made sure of it.
Then Ethan started asking questions about where I almost married his mother.
Nobody had told him that.
Evelyn had.
Through the floor.
Small whispers.
At night.
The revelation stunned me.
“You spoke to him?”
Evelyn nodded.
“Sometimes he played in the hallway.”
Ethan looked proud.
“Floor lady.”
I almost laughed despite everything.
Evelyn smiled through tears.
“I told him stories.”
“Did you tell him you were his mother?”
“No.”
“Why?”
She looked toward Bianca.
“Because I still believed Raffaele didn’t want me found.”
That sentence hurt every time.
Healing would not be built by repeating that I wanted her.
She needed time to believe it.
Matteo understood.
He stayed away unless she invited him closer.
Antonio asked for forgiveness.
Nobody gave it.
He accepted removal from Castellano command without argument.
Bianca remained in the house under my control until I decided what came next.
But the center of my life shifted.
No more interrogations first.
No more family council first.
Evelyn needed doctors.
Food.
Sunlight.
Sleep.
Ethan needed explanation.
I needed to stop treating every truth like something that could be solved with punishment.
One night Evelyn stood in the doorway of my room.
Not entering.
Just standing there.
“You still sleep on the left.”
I looked at the empty right side.
“Yes.”
She smiled faintly.
May you like
“So do I.”
That was the first moment in three years that felt like something other than damage.
