Chapter 14

Evelyn saw sunlight every morning after that.
At first only ten minutes.
Then twenty.
Then breakfast outside.
Ethan sat beside her and explained dinosaurs with the seriousness of a priest.
She listened like every word was sacred.
They did not call each other Mommy and son all the time.
Not yet.
Sometimes he called her Evelyn.
Sometimes Floor Lady.
The first time he called her Mom by accident, both of them froze.
He continued talking as if it had not happened.
She waited until he left before crying.
I learned not to fix those moments.
Just stay.
Matteo moved into a small guest house on the property. Not because he deserved comfort. Because exile had already taught him disappearing does not repair anything.
Antonio left Castellano operations entirely.
Some old captains complained.
I let them.
Then removed two who called what happened to Evelyn “family business.”
Those words no longer had permission inside my organization.
One afternoon, Ethan brought Evelyn the veil.
Anna had cleaned it.
The pearl hairpiece still sat crooked where the floor pulled it loose.
Evelyn touched it carefully.
“Do you want it?” I asked.
She shook her head.
“I thought I would.”
Then she looked at the veil.
“It kept me connected to the worst day of my life because it was the only thing from that day I still had.”
She handed it to Ethan.
“Can we make something?”
He immediately said yes.
Of course.
Children destroy symbolism efficiently.
They cut a small piece from the edge and tied it around his wooden dinosaur like a cape.
Evelyn laughed so hard she had to sit down.
I laughed too.
The veil that was meant to make her a bride.
Then became evidence of captivity.
Now became a dinosaur cape.
I liked that better.

Not every relic deserved reverence.
Sometimes healing meant making it ridiculous.
