Chapter 15

Evelyn asked about the wedding after four months.

Not the disappearance.

The wedding.

“What happened downstairs?”

I told her.

Guests waited two hours.

My father announced she had run.

I refused to believe him.

I searched the estate.

Not enough.

That detail still haunted me.

“I searched everywhere except beneath the room.”

Evelyn touched my hand.

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

“No.”

Her voice sharpened.

“Don’t do that.”

I looked at her.

She continued.

“Bianca did that to me for years. She made everything feel like something I should have understood sooner.”

That stopped me.

Evelyn had learned the shape of manipulated guilt more intimately than anyone.

I nodded.

Then she asked the question I had been waiting for.

“Would you still have married me?”

I stared at her.

She smiled faintly.

“Three years later. One child. One dead father. One resurrected brother. Slightly complicated situation.”

I almost laughed.

“Yes.”

Her smile disappeared.

“Don’t say it because you feel guilty.”

“I’m not.”

That was the first time I understood the answer clearly.

“I don’t want the wedding back.”

She looked at me.

“I want you.”

Silence.

Then she nodded.

“Good.”

No dramatic kiss.

No instant reunion.

She rested her head against my shoulder.

That was enough.

Later, Ethan climbed between us on the sofa because apparently emotional progress means nothing to a three-year-old who wants cartoons.

He fell asleep with one foot against Evelyn and one hand gripping my sleeve.

She looked down.

“Our son.”

The words came quietly.

“Yes.”

She cried.

This time not from grief.

Not entirely.

Some losses never return.

But some stolen things do.

May you like

Not unchanged.

Still real.
