Chapter 17

One year after Anna pulled the veil from beneath the floor, Ethan ran through the old bridal suite chasing a wooden airplane.

He was four now.

Louder.

Faster.

Completely uninterested in respecting furniture.

Evelyn sat beside the fireplace reading while I pretended to work at the long table.

The room looked nothing like it had on our wedding day.

Good.

Ethan’s airplane slid beneath the table.

He dropped to his knees.

For one second, Evelyn went still.

I saw it.

So did she.

Old reflex.

Floor.

Hidden space.

Something underneath.

Then Ethan crawled out holding the airplane and a dust ball.

“Treasure.”

Evelyn laughed.

“Absolutely not.”

He brought it to me anyway.

I looked at her.

She was smiling.

That mattered.

Later, after Ethan went to bed, Evelyn stood over the strip of old wood preserved in the wall.

The place where the veil first appeared.

“I thought about that seam every day.”

I stood beside her.

“So did I.”

“For different reasons.”

“Yes.”

She touched the wood.

“For me it meant maybe somebody would finally look down.”

I swallowed.

“For me it means I almost never did.”

She took my hand.

Then corrected me.

“No.”

I looked at her.

“It means you finally did.”

That was kinder than I deserved.

Maybe that was not for me to decide anymore.

We stood there quietly.

No Bianca.

No father.

No council.

No hidden brother waiting to replace me.

Just us.

And above the fireplace hung one ridiculous object Ethan insisted belonged there.

A small wooden dinosaur wearing a strip of white wedding veil as a cape.

Three years earlier, that veil had been hidden beneath the floor with the woman I loved.

A year earlier, it became the clue that brought her back into my life.

Now our son had turned part of it into something ordinary.

Something silly.

Something safe.

I used to think finding Evelyn would be the end of the story I lost on our wedding day.

It wasn’t.

Finding her was only the moment the lies stopped owning the ending.

She never ran away.

She never abandoned Ethan.

May you like

She never stopped trying to reach me.

And in the end, all it took was one loose floorboard, one stubborn housemaid, and a veil that refused to stay buried.
