Chapter 16

We closed the bridal suite for six months.

Then Evelyn asked to open it.

Her choice.

We removed the hidden floor chambers first.

Not sealed.

Destroyed.

Stone pulled out.

Wood removed.

No secret spaces left beneath that room.

Matteo helped.

So did I.

Evelyn watched from the doorway.

At one point Ethan dropped a toy into the open foundation and shouted that the floor ate it.

Everyone froze.

Then Evelyn laughed.

The tension broke.

After construction, the room became a family library.

Not a memorial.

No wedding photographs.

No shrine to what should have happened.

Books.

Windows.

A long table.

One corner for Ethan.

One chair Evelyn liked beside the fireplace.

The exact floor seam where the veil appeared was preserved in a small strip of old wood along the wall.

Not hidden.

Visible.

Anna asked why.

Evelyn answered.

“Because I don’t want people thinking healing means pretending there was never a hole.”

I loved her for that sentence.

Bianca wrote twice.

Evelyn did not answer.

Ethan asked about her once.

I told him Aunt Bianca had made choices that meant she could not be around us.

He accepted that.

Children understand boundaries better than adults who benefit from breaking them.

Matteo eventually asked if he could leave.

Not disappear.

Leave.

Build something elsewhere.

I said yes.

He hugged Ethan goodbye.

Evelyn allowed him to hug her too.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition.

Antonio sent his Castellano pin back to me.

I kept it in a drawer.

Not as respect.

As reminder.

Loyalty that requires silence is not loyalty.

Family that requires fear is not family.

And a house with secret rooms will eventually become a prison for someone.

I had learned all three too late.

But Ethan would not.
