Lucinda’s cooperation did not repair anything.
It damaged more.
Grant’s attorney accused her of inventing the plan to save herself.
Grant moved out of their Westchester home.
Within a week he filed for legal separation.
Lucinda called Silvio twice.
He did not answer.
Ethan asked once whether Aunt Lucy was coming back.
Silvio said, “Not right now.”
Ethan did not ask again.
That hurt Lucinda more than any formal consequence eventually would.
The accountants expanded their review.
Grant’s questionable invoices went back nearly three years.
Some were legitimate.
Some were inflated.
Some appeared to cover private debts.
Yet Silvio also had to confront his own role.
He had approved Grant’s growing authority because it was easier.
After Claire became ill during pregnancy, Silvio stopped reviewing small operational decisions.
Grant made himself useful.
Lucinda made herself indispensable.
Silvio rewarded both with access.
He had built a structure in which family loyalty substituted for oversight.
Grant exploited it.
Lucinda hid inside it.
At his therapy session, Silvio finally said something he had avoided.
“I thought people obeying me meant I was paying attention.”
The therapist asked, “Did it?”
“No.”
The council’s independent review reached a similar conclusion.
Grant appeared to have abused authority.
But Silvio’s governance had been dangerously centralized.
The council would not simply restore him to his old role even if Grant was removed.
Mara told him plainly.
“The truth about them doesn’t erase your management failures.”
“Or the slap.”
“Or the slap.”
The district attorney’s office reviewed the courtyard incident separately.
Grant’s first punch supported Silvio’s self-defense claim regarding the counterpunch.
Lucinda was different.
Silvio had taken the key from her before striking her.
He could not claim the same necessity.
He told Mara he would not lie about it.
Meanwhile, Lucinda’s statement gave investigators the architecture of the hot-car plan.
But architecture was not enough.
Grant could still call it a desperate sister shifting blame.
They needed independent evidence that he had intended the children to remain longer than the eight minutes Lucinda claimed.
