Chapter 4

The request for a leadership review reached the council faster than the hospital records did.

That bothered Silvio.

Grant had been hit less than three hours before his lawyer began discussing governance.

Too fast for improvisation.

Mara agreed.

“Somebody was prepared.”

The Marchetti holding company was legitimate on paper—hotels, food distribution, real estate, event properties—but its leadership culture remained old-fashioned enough that family reputation mattered almost as much as balance sheets.

Eight months earlier, the council had adopted a governance provision allowing temporary review of any managing member whose conduct created significant legal or reputational exposure.

At the time, Silvio barely noticed.

Another executive had been arrested for drunk driving.

Grant had strongly supported the rule.

So had Lucinda.

Silvio requested the original meeting packet.

Then he did something the council did not expect.

He voluntarily stepped away from active voting until the child-endangerment facts were established.

His cousin Dominic stared at him across the boardroom.

“You step aside, Grant gets what he wants.”

“If I stay by force, he gets something better.”

“What?”

“A reason to say I’m afraid of the facts.”

Silvio appointed the company’s outside chief operating officer to handle daily decisions.

It cost him control.

It also removed Grant’s argument that Silvio was obstructing review.

That evening, an independent automotive technician inspected the SUV.

No mechanical failure.

The climate system had been turned off.

Rear child-safety locks had been engaged.

The key fob remained capable of opening every door from outside.

Someone holding the key could have ended the danger in seconds.

Silvio looked at the key in the evidence bag.

Lucinda had spun it around one finger while Ethan and Mia were trapped behind glass.

The technician added another detail.

The SUV stored recent climate-control events.

The air-conditioning had been running when the vehicle left the underground garage.

It had been switched off shortly after reaching the courtyard.

“From inside?” Mara asked.

“Could be dashboard controls. Could be remote settings depending on who had the fob and app access.”

Grant had administrator access to the family fleet app through his security company.

Silvio stared at the report.

The children had not accidentally been placed in a warm vehicle.

Somebody had deliberately made it hotter.
