Chapter 5

The first person to admit knowing more was not a family member.
It was Javier Morales, the estate’s head valet.
He asked to meet Mara privately.
Silvio agreed not to attend.
An hour later Mara came to the Manhattan apartment with three pages of notes.
“Lucinda told Javier not to let anyone touch your SUV.”
Silvio’s expression hardened.
“When?”
“About ten minutes before it was moved.”
“She moved it?”
“Not personally.”
A junior valet had driven it from the underground garage after receiving an instruction through Grant’s event-security desk.
The valet assumed the SUV was being staged for Silvio’s departure.
Once it reached the courtyard, Lucinda took the key.
Then she told Javier the family needed privacy around the vehicle.
“Why didn’t he question it?”
“Because she’s your sister.”
Another version of the same answer.
Trust.
Authority.
Silence.
Mara continued.
“There’s more.”
The courtyard camera had not failed.
Grant’s security office had redirected it toward the estate entrance for what he described as a “VIP arrival concern.”
No VIP arrived during that window.
Silvio looked toward the living room.
Ethan was building a plastic shark enclosure on the rug.
“How long was the camera redirected?”
“From 1:35 to 2:09.”
The SUV entered the courtyard at 1:41.
Silvio found the children at 2:03.
Six minutes after the rescue, the camera returned to normal.
Mara sat across from him.
“This wasn’t random.”
Silvio already knew.
But saying it aloud made the room feel smaller.
That night Lucinda called.
Silvio let it ring twice before answering.
“You’re destroying Grant’s business,” she said.
“You put my children in a locked car.”
“I didn’t know it would get that hot.”
Silvio went still.
Lucinda stopped talking.
He had not asked whether she knew.
She had answered anyway.
“How hot did you expect it to get?”
“I didn’t mean—”
“How long were they supposed to stay inside?”
Lucinda’s breathing changed.
Then she disconnected.
Silvio stared at the phone.

For the first time, he had something more useful than anger.
Lucinda had just admitted there had been a plan.
