Chapter 1

Sofia did not answer immediately.

Raffaele stood in the service kitchen holding her hands while the birthday gala continued faintly beyond the closed ballroom doors.

Her skin was cracked around the knuckles. Detergent had turned several cuts white at the edges.

Lily pressed herself against Sofia’s leg.

Raffaele looked at his wife.

“How long?”

Sofia finally lifted her eyes.

“Since Christmas.”

Six months.

Raffaele released her hands only because he was afraid of squeezing them.

Delia pushed herself upright beside the collapsed cookware rack.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Sofia flinched at her voice.

Raffaele noticed.

Marcus was still on the floor beside the overturned pastry cart, holding his jaw.

“Don’t start making this into something it isn’t,” he said.

Raffaele looked at him.

Nobody else spoke.

Sofia swallowed.

“It wasn’t always this bad.”

“What happened at Christmas?”

Delia cut in.

“She offered to help.”

Sofia turned toward her.

“No.”

One word.

Quiet.

But clear.

Delia stared at her.

Sofia continued.

“The dishwasher called out. I helped because everyone was overwhelmed.”

“That’s what I said.”

“Then you started sending people home early.”

Delia’s expression tightened.

Sofia looked back at Raffaele.

“After that, every family dinner, every event, every time you were in a meeting upstairs…”

Her voice trailed off.

Raffaele remembered those nights.

He would come downstairs and ask why Sofia looked exhausted.

She always said Lily had kept her busy.

He had believed her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Sofia’s eyes shifted toward Marcus.

Then back to Raffaele.

“I tried.”

That answer landed harder than he expected.

Raffaele looked at Delia.

His sister shook her head.

“She’s lying because she knows what tonight looked like.”

Lily suddenly spoke.

“Aunt Delia makes Mommy wash.”

Every adult in the kitchen looked toward the child.

Lily pointed at the sink.

“She says Mommy knows how.”

Raffaele crouched beside her.

“When have you seen that?”

Lily began counting on her fingers without understanding the dates.

“Christmas. Grandpa dinner. The music night. Mommy birthday.”

Sofia closed her eyes.

Raffaele stood again.

Four events.

Maybe more.

He looked at the temporary kitchen staff.

Several avoided his eyes.

One older cook stared directly back.

Raffaele recognized him as Samuel Ortiz, the penthouse’s longtime executive chef.

“Samuel.”

The chef removed his apron.

“I think you should take Mrs. Montoro and Lily out of this kitchen first.”

Raffaele studied him.

“Why?”

Samuel looked toward Delia.

May you like

Then Marcus.

“Because once I tell you what I know, this stops being a family argument.”
