Chapter 20

Raffaele lost an argument with Samuel when Lily was nine.

Publicly.

That mattered.

The penthouse was hosting its first large family event in years.

Not controlled by Delia.

Not controlled by Sofia.

Professional operations.

Samuel set kitchen staffing.

The operations manager set shifts.

Raffaele approved the event budget but not time records.

Exactly as designed.

Two hours before dinner, a catering truck broke down.

Samuel said service needed to begin thirty minutes late.

Raffaele said no.

Samuel stared.

“Then we reduce the menu.”

“No.”

“Then dinner starts late.”

“There are eighty guests.”

“Yes.”

“Find people.”

Samuel’s face changed.

Not fear.

Old memory.

Raffaele heard himself.

Find people.

As if bodies appeared because the Montoro name demanded them.

Samuel said:

“I am not calling off-duty workers in without proper notice because your cousins will be hungry.”

Silence.

Two staff members looked away.

Raffaele felt anger.

Then embarrassment.

Then the older thing underneath both.

Authority.

He could make Samuel do it.

Legally maybe.

Practically definitely.

That was the point.

He looked at the schedule.

Then:

“Dinner starts late.”

Samuel nodded.

No gratitude.

Good.

The meal began thirty-two minutes late.

Nobody died.

Anthony complained.

Raffaele told him:

“Eat bread.”

Sofia almost choked on her drink.

Later, Samuel found Raffaele in the kitchen.

“You okay?”

Raffaele stared.

“You won.”

“That wasn’t what happened.”

Right.

Samuel continued.

“You disagreed. I made the staffing call because it’s my job.”

Different.

Raffaele looked at the line cooks.

Everyone still working.

Nobody suddenly fired.

No one filling gaps because family pressure demanded it.

“That still feels like losing.”

Samuel smiled.

“That sounds expensive to discuss in therapy.”

Apparently everyone had become intolerable.

Lily heard the story from Sofia later.

“Daddy got told no?”

“Yes.”

“Samuel?”

“Yes.”

“Did Daddy get mad?”

“Yes.”

Raffaele entered the room at exactly the wrong moment.

Lily smiled.

“Did you fire him?”

“No.”

“Good.”

He stared at Sofia.

She looked innocent.

Then Lily asked:

“Can Samuel tell you no because chef?”

“Yes.”

“Can Mommy?”

“That is a completely different—”

Sofia raised an eyebrow.

Raffaele stopped.

Lily laughed.

The actual answer was yes.

Not because Sofia held a job title above him.

Because marriage was not command structure.

That distinction had been painfully expensive to learn.

At the next event, Samuel changed the dessert schedule without asking Raffaele.

Raffaele noticed.

Did nothing.

Mostly.

He complained to Sofia afterward.

She listened.

Then:

“Do you want me to fix it?”

He looked at her.

“No.”

May you like

Good.

Another old pathway closed.
