Chapter 10

Evelyn reconstructed the scheme over the next four days.
When she finally presented it, Sofia asked Samuel to attend.
Raffaele noticed that.
His wife trusted the chef beside her.
She still sat across from her husband.
The staffing fraud was real.
Marcus had kept Metropolitan alive by feeding it Montoro contracts.
Delia helped inflate head counts and hours.
Metropolitan returned a portion of the excess money to Delia’s management company.
But that was not the twist.
The twist was Sofia.
Raffaele had spent weeks believing she stayed silent because Delia had frightened her into submission.
That was only partly true.
Three months earlier, Sofia had already figured out that the kitchen shortages and invoices did not match.
She went to Samuel.
Together they began preserving closing reports and counting actual workers.
Sofia deliberately continued covering missing shifts.
Not because Delia convinced her she belonged at the sink.
Because quitting the kitchen would have cut off her best view of the scheme.
Raffaele stared at her.
“You let this continue?”
Sofia’s expression changed.
“For three months.”
“You let her treat you like that?”
“I let her think I wasn’t paying attention.”
Samuel looked down.
Raffaele struggled to keep his voice steady.
“Why not bring me the first week?”
Sofia answered with devastating simplicity.
“Look at what you did the first night you finally saw it.”
Nobody spoke.
Marcus shoved Raffaele first.
Delia had already assaulted Sofia.
None of that changed the point.
Sofia knew her husband.
She knew if she came to him with suspicion instead of proof, he would confront his sister immediately.
Delia would deny everything.
Marcus would destroy records.
Employees would become frightened.
And Raffaele’s temper might turn an accounting problem into something violent.
So Sofia waited.
She washed dishes.
She wrote down names.
She photographed schedules openly as part of closing work.
She helped Samuel preserve originals.
She absorbed Delia’s insults because every understaffed night created another comparison between what Metropolitan billed and what actually happened.
Three earlier clues suddenly made sense.
Sofia knew the invoices were wrong before the audit.
Marcus went to Emily’s building specifically for her notebook.
And Delia’s cruelty had escalated as Sofia spent more time in the one part of the household where the staffing fraud was visible.
The gala was not simply another humiliation.
Delia had begun to suspect Sofia was collecting evidence.
The slap came after Sofia paused over a pan because she had spent hours watching which workers were missing.
Raffaele looked at his wife’s damaged hands.
“You were afraid of me.”
Sofia shook her head.
“That’s not exactly it.”
“Then what?”
“I was afraid of what you do when you love somebody and think they’ve been hurt.”
That distinction hurt more.
May you like
Sofia had trusted his loyalty.
She had not trusted his restraint.
