Chapter 11

The truth did not bring Sofia home.

Raffaele had half expected it to.

He understood how selfish that expectation was only after she refused.

“You know I believe you.”

“That isn’t the problem.”

“I know what Delia did.”

“That isn’t the whole problem either.”

They were sitting in Emily’s living room after Lily went to bed.

Sofia’s hands had mostly healed.

Thin pink lines remained across several knuckles.

“You spent years making everybody think your anger was what kept us safe,” she said.

Raffaele listened.

“So when something was wrong, I had to calculate your reaction before I could ask for help.”

He looked down.

“I never touched you.”

“I didn’t say you did.”

That mattered.

Sofia did not exaggerate him into a monster.

She did something harder.

She described him accurately.

Raffaele protected people.

He also frightened them.

Both could be true.

Samuel carried his own guilt.

He admitted during the audit that he had allowed Sofia to take physical work he should have stopped.

“She insisted,” he told Raffaele.

“You were the chef.”

“And she was your wife.”

Samuel looked ashamed.

“Neither one of us wanted to be the man who told her what she was allowed to do.”

The audit produced more evidence.

But accountability became complicated.

Delia denied receiving kickbacks.

She claimed the consulting fees paid for legitimate event-planning work.

Marcus admitted using Metropolitan but denied knowing invoices were inflated.

Victor Lang, Metropolitan’s owner, blamed administrative mistakes.

Each explanation was weak.

Weak was not the same as disproven.

Evelyn needed bank records, contracts and testimony connecting the payments to deliberate false billing.

Claire also warned Raffaele that family gossip had turned ugly.

Some relatives said Sofia had orchestrated everything to remove Delia from the family.

Others asked why she secretly documented events for months.

Raffaele wanted to answer every person.

Sofia stopped him.

“You don’t have to make everyone like me.”

“They’re calling you a liar.”

“I know who I am.”

Raffaele looked at her.

That was another difference between them.

He had spent half his life controlling what people thought of the Montoro name.

Sofia wanted something simpler.

A life where she did not need the name to defend her.

Then Evelyn called with news.

May you like

Victor Lang wanted to talk.

But only if Marcus and Delia were not present.
