Chapter 21

Sofia returned to work when Lily was ten.
Not in a Montoro company.
That surprised Raffaele.
She had finished community college years earlier.
Before marriage.
Before Lily.
Before penthouse life swallowed most ordinary decisions.
She enrolled in a hospitality-management program.
Raffaele assumed she wanted to work with Montoro Event Services.
She did not.
“Why not?”
Sofia looked at him.
The question answered itself.
Still:
“I want to know what I am without your company.”
That hurt.
Not because it was cruel.
Because it was fair.
She accepted a management job with an independent restaurant group.
Small.
Three locations.
No Montoro investment.
Raffaele checked.
Quietly.
Sofia found out.
Of course.
“You investigated my employer?”
“Due diligence.”
“You are not investing.”
“No.”
“Then what exactly were you diligencing?”
He stopped.
Fear.
Control.
Again.
The company was legitimate.
No security concern.
No conflict with his businesses.
He had used resources available to him because uncertainty felt uncomfortable.
Sofia became furious.
Not afraid.
That was probably progress.
Still furious.
“You don’t get to turn every part of my life into a file.”
“I wanted to make sure—”
She held up one hand.
“No.”
Raffaele stopped.
Therapy had also taught Sofia how to interrupt him earlier.
Useful.
He apologized.
Then did something harder.
He instructed his security office that Sofia’s professional relationships could not be investigated without a documented threat or her consent unless immediate safety required otherwise.
The head of security asked:
“Even vendors near her workplace?”
“Yes.”
“Even if they have connections to your companies?”
“If there’s a business conflict, compliance handles it.”
Different system.
Months later Sofia made her own mistake.
One of her restaurant employees was accused of stealing wine.
Sofia believed him.
He had worked hard.
Covered shifts.
Helped during a family emergency.
She wanted to defend him.
Then stopped.
Loyalty.
Evidence.
Again.
An inventory review showed the employee had not stolen the wine.
A receiving error caused the discrepancy.
Sofia came home.
“Annoyingly, your accountant philosophy worked.”
Raffaele looked pleased.
“Say it again.”
“No.”
He followed her into the kitchen.
“You said I was right.”
“I said the system was right.”
“Same.”
“It absolutely is not.”
Good.
Their marriage had recovered enough for arguments to lose their symbolic weight.
Sofia could be wrong.
Raffaele could be right.

Neither fact determined who controlled the relationship.
That was probably what safety had looked like before either of them knew how to build it.
