Chapter 10

The earliest payments changed the story.

Six years earlier, Vanessa had been pregnant and living outside Boston with Daniel Mercer, the man she later married.

Sybil knew.

She had known before Milo was born.

The family accountant found an old reimbursement request attached to one of Ethan’s invoices.

Travel.

Boston.

Private medical consultation.

The authorization carried Sybil’s signature.

Rebecca obtained Gavin’s restored messages and found references stretching back years.

Not explicit confessions.

Fragments.

“Still the right age.”

“Keep Vanessa comfortable.”

“Gavin doesn’t need this yet.”

Then Vanessa finally stopped protecting Sybil.

She gave Rebecca copies of old emails.

The truth was uglier because it was simpler than Alessandra expected.

Sybil had disliked Alessandra long before the marriage.

Not because Alessandra was weak.

Because she was stronger than Gavin.

When Gavin’s father died, the family expected Gavin to become the public center of the Ashford organization.

Instead, lenders trusted Alessandra.

Managers trusted Alessandra.

The council trusted Alessandra.

Even Sybil’s late husband had increasingly relied on her judgment.

Gavin became the boss’s husband inside the family whose name he had inherited.

Sybil never forgave that.

When she learned an old girlfriend of Gavin’s was pregnant at roughly the right time, she began supporting Ethan quietly.

She kept Vanessa within reach.

Years later, when Gavin’s marriage weakened, Sybil brought Vanessa back into his orbit.

The affair itself did not need to be engineered.

Gavin made that choice eagerly enough.

But once he was emotionally attached, Sybil introduced the possibility that Milo was his.

Then she fabricated certainty.

She wanted Gavin to feel that he had another family waiting for him.

A woman who admired him.

A boy who could be presented as his firstborn.

A household in which he would not stand behind Alessandra.

Vanessa wanted financial safety badly enough to cooperate.

Ethan wanted the Ashford contracts Sybil kept sending his way.

And Gavin wanted to feel important badly enough not to ask the questions he would have asked in any business deal.

The gala humiliation of Tobin had not been random cruelty.

Sybil wanted the choice made publicly.

Tobin’s room was the symbol.

Vanessa’s child in.

Alessandra’s child pushed aside.

Gavin forced to stand with one family in front of the council.

But Sybil miscalculated one thing.

She believed embarrassing Alessandra would weaken her.

Instead, she had made the entire council witness what her plan required doing to a three-year-old.

Alessandra closed Vanessa’s email file.

Gavin sat across from her.

“My mother built this for years.”

“Yes.”

He looked sick.

“And I walked right into it.”

Alessandra shook her head.

“No.”

May you like

He looked up.

“She opened the door,” Alessandra said. “You walked through it yourself.”
