Chapter 9

Ethan denied writing anything meaningful.
His lawyer called the message “taken out of context.”
So Rebecca asked for the context.
Ethan stopped responding.
The family council learned about the fabricated report within forty-eight hours because Ethan held contracts with three Ashford properties and Sybil still sat on the family foundation committee.
Alessandra did not make a speech.
She distributed documents through counsel.
That was worse.
The reaction was immediate.
Two capos demanded Ethan’s contracts be suspended pending review.
The foundation’s outside accountant began examining Sybil’s payments.
Hotel counsel warned that using charitable or foundation funds for personal arrangements could create serious tax and governance problems depending on how the transactions had been categorized.
Sybil called Gavin.
He put her on speaker with Alessandra’s permission.
“You gave them our messages?”
“Yes.”
“You gave your wife ammunition against your own mother?”
“My wife is divorcing me.”
Sybil went quiet.
Gavin continued.
“You knew Milo wasn’t mine.”
“I knew there was uncertainty.”
“You fabricated a DNA report.”
“I did no such thing.”
“Then why did you send me something the laboratory says never existed?”
Sybil changed direction.
“Vanessa manipulated you.”
Across the room, Alessandra watched Gavin recognize the tactic.
Three months earlier, it might have worked.
“Did you know?”
Gavin asked again.
Sybil refused to answer.
He ended the call.
The consequences spread beyond family gossip.
The Ashford board postponed a major hotel expansion vote because Ethan’s companies were attached to several projected security contracts.
Foundation donors requested clarification.
Gavin resigned temporarily from two boards rather than force Alessandra to remove him.
Tobin began seeing a child therapist recommended by his pediatrician.
The therapist told Alessandra something she had not expected.
“Don’t push him to forgive his father.”
“I’m not.”
“Good. And don’t push him to reject him either.”
Alessandra looked through the observation window.
Gavin was building a wooden train track with Tobin during a supervised family session.
Tobin spoke to him.
He did not sit in his lap.
Progress existed in inches.
When Alessandra returned to the hotel that evening, Margaret Price was waiting with another foundation report.
Sybil’s payments to Cole Lifestyle Strategies had not started two years ago.
That was only when they changed names.
May you like
Smaller payments to Ethan had begun almost six years earlier.
Three months before Milo was born.
