Chapter 13

The invoice did not prove who created the document.
But it created a trail.
The foundation’s outside counsel requested supporting records from Ethan’s company.
Ethan produced none.
The listed genetic consultant denied ever performing work for him.
The laboratory whose logo appeared on the fabricated report sent a formal statement confirming it had never issued the document.
Vanessa provided emails in which Ethan told her not to worry about “the paperwork for Gavin.”
Gavin’s restored messages showed Sybil telling him the test had been “handled privately to protect the family.”
Each piece alone allowed an excuse.
Together, they formed a chronology.
Rebecca advised Alessandra not to turn the family council into a criminal court.
“You have enough to make governance decisions,” she said. “Anything beyond that belongs with the appropriate professionals.”
So Alessandra separated the problems.
The divorce remained in family court.
Tobin’s parenting arrangements were handled through attorneys and his therapist’s recommendations.
The foundation’s financial issues went to independent counsel and accountants.
The suspected fabrication and questionable payments were referred for appropriate legal review.
No threats.
No private punishment.
No disappearing evidence.
For a family accustomed to solving everything internally, using ordinary procedures felt almost radical.
Gavin agreed to a temporary parenting plan.
Two daytime visits each week.
No Sybil.
No Vanessa.
No family business during Tobin’s time.
The first week, Tobin refused the second visit.
Gavin did not demand enforcement.
He sent a message through Alessandra.
Tell him I’ll be there when he wants me.
Alessandra showed Tobin the message.
He asked, “Daddy not mad?”
“No.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
He chose to see Gavin the next Saturday.
Meanwhile, Vanessa signed a statement explaining her role in allowing the false paternity claim to continue.
She did not excuse herself with Sybil’s manipulation.
She admitted she had needed money and wanted security for Milo.
That mattered to Alessandra.
Not forgiveness.
Accuracy.
The final piece came from Ethan himself.
Under financial pressure, he stopped protecting Sybil.
Through counsel, he acknowledged that Sybil had instructed him to obtain a realistic-looking paternity report because she believed Gavin would never demand an independent test once he became emotionally invested.
He insisted Sybil designed the scheme.
Sybil insisted Ethan embellished it.

But now the question of whether a deception existed was over.
The only remaining question was whether Sybil would accept responsibility before the Ashford council removed her anyway.
