Chapter 6

Gavin agreed to the independent test immediately.
That surprised Alessandra.
He had spent days defending himself badly, minimizing choices, and asking her not to make things public.
Now he seemed almost desperate for certainty.
The samples were collected at a Manhattan clinic under documented procedures with both attorneys receiving the laboratory information.
No family intermediaries.
No photocopies passed across dining tables.
Then came the waiting.
Tobin’s behavior changed first.
He stopped asking about the gala.
Instead, he started checking his bedroom every time they returned home.
He would push the door open, look at his bed, stuffed animals, and clothes, then continue inside.
One night Alessandra found him dragging his small suitcase from the closet.
“What are you doing?”
“Packing first.”
“For where?”
He shrugged.
“In case Grandma comes.”
Alessandra sat on the carpet beside him.
“Grandma isn’t coming into this apartment.”
“Daddy let her.”
Three words.
No anger.
No crying.
Just memory.
Alessandra called Rebecca the next morning.
“I want Sybil kept away from him.”
Rebecca advised a written boundary first unless there was a legal reason requiring more.
Alessandra sent it.
No visits.
No school pickup.
No access to Tobin through staff.
No unsupervised contact.
Sybil called within four minutes.
“You’re using my grandson to punish me.”
“No. I’m protecting him from someone who packed his bedroom into a trunk.”
“You think you can erase me?”
“I think you’re confusing access with ownership.”
Sybil’s voice turned colder.
“That boy is an Ashford because of my son.”
“He’s an Ashford because he’s Tobin.”
Sybil hung up.
That same afternoon Gavin arrived for his scheduled visit.
Tobin allowed him into the room but kept the stuffed shark tucked beneath one arm.
Gavin sat on the floor.
“I shouldn’t have helped Grandma pack your things.”
Tobin nodded solemnly.
“Why did you?”
Gavin glanced toward Alessandra.
She did not rescue him.
“Because Daddy was being selfish.”
“What’s selfish?”
“Wanting what you want so badly that you don’t think enough about who it hurts.”
Tobin considered this.
Then pointed toward the door.
“Can my shark stay?”
“Yes.”
“Can my bed stay?”
“Yes.”
“Can I stay?”
Gavin’s face broke for the first time.
“Yes.”
Tobin went back to his blocks.
When Gavin left, Alessandra followed him into the hall.
“That was better.”
He looked surprised.
It was the first kind thing she had said to him since the gala.
Then his phone buzzed.
May you like
He checked the screen.
The laboratory results were ready.
