Chapter 14

The council gathered on the same rooftop where Tobin’s belongings had been dumped.
Alessandra had considered changing the location.
Then decided against it.
The room looked different without the gala.
No ice displays.
No champagne towers.
No gowns.
Just winter light against Manhattan glass and a long table with fifteen seats.
Sybil arrived last.
Gavin was already seated.
He no longer had a voting role while the divorce and governance reviews remained unresolved, but Alessandra had allowed him to attend because the matter involved his mother and his name.
Sybil sat across from her.
Alessandra gave her one opportunity.
“Tell them what you did.”
Sybil looked around the table.
“I tried to protect my son’s place in this family.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“It’s the only one that matters.”
Gavin spoke quietly.
“No, Mom.”
She looked at him.
He had spent his entire life either seeking her approval or resenting its conditions.
Now his voice was almost gentle.
“You didn’t protect me. You gave me excuses.”
Sybil’s mouth tightened.
“You’re choosing her again.”
“No.”
Gavin glanced toward Alessandra.
“She’s divorcing me.”
Several people shifted.
Gavin continued.
“I’m choosing to stop blaming her for what I did.”
Sybil looked suddenly older.
Alessandra placed the findings in front of the council.
Payments.
Messages.
The fabricated report.
Vanessa’s statement.
Ethan’s acknowledgment.
Then she made the choice everyone expected to be harsher.
“I am not asking this council to destroy Sybil Ashford.”
Sybil looked up.
“I’m asking that she be removed from every family governance position, lose authority over foundation funds, and have no role in decisions involving Tobin.”
One capo asked, “And Ethan?”
“Contracts terminated subject to existing legal obligations. Any financial recovery proceeds through counsel.”
Another asked about Vanessa.
“She has no family position to remove.”
“And Gavin?”
Alessandra looked at her husband.
“Gavin and I are ending our marriage. His relationship with his son is not something this council gets to vote on.”
That distinction mattered most.
She would not use family power to decide what belonged to Tobin.
Sybil finally spoke.
“If you do this, you humiliate me in front of everyone.”
Alessandra looked at the spot on the carpet where Tobin’s drawing had lain beneath Vanessa’s heel.
“No.”

She signed the resolution.
“You did that part yourself.”
