Chapter 1

Raffaele Moretti did not ask who had started it.

He had seen enough to know who had crossed the first line.

His daughter stood behind Adrian with both hands wrapped around the teenager’s shirt.

The shoe-polishing cloth lay across Vanessa’s dress.

Grant pushed jackets and broken helmet boxes away from himself, blood gathering at the corner of his mouth.

“You’re insane,” he said.

Raffaele looked past him.

At the two security men.

Neither belonged to Raffaele’s regular estate detail.

He knew every man responsible for security on his property.

These two wore expensive biker jackets and earpieces, but Raffaele had never approved them.

“Who are they?”

Grant wiped his mouth.

“Extra event security.”

“I didn’t hire extra event security.”

Vanessa pushed herself upright against the ruined polishing station.

“Grant did.”

Raffaele turned toward her.

She had stopped looking frightened.

Now she looked irritated.

That difference mattered.

Adrian finally spoke.

“They were waiting for me.”

Raffaele looked at his nephew.

“What?”

“When I went for Lily, they moved before Grant told them what to do.”

Grant laughed.

“He assaulted them.”

“One grabbed me first.”

“Because you were out of control.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Recognition.

“You knew I’d go for her.”

Vanessa snapped, “Enough.”

Lily flinched at the sound.

Raffaele immediately crouched beside his daughter.

“Did Vanessa hurt you?”

Lily looked at her stepmother.

Then at Grant.

“She said I had to make Uncle Grant shiny.”

Raffaele’s jaw tightened.

“She said Adrian would make trouble if I cried.”

Every adult nearby heard it.

Vanessa’s face lost color.

Adrian turned toward her.

“You told her that?”

Raffaele stood.

The charity rally had gone quiet around them.

Capos.

Donors.

Employees.

Guests.

Everybody had witnessed enough that the family could no longer erase the scene afterward.

Grant looked toward the courtyard exit.

Raffaele noticed.

“So nobody leaves.”

Grant smiled without humor.

“You want to hold people here?”

“No.”

Raffaele handed Lily to one of his own bodyguards.

“I want the event records, security roster, vendor contracts, and camera footage preserved before anyone suddenly forgets what happened.”

Vanessa stared at him.

For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

May you like

Not because he had struck her.

Because he had asked for records.
