Adrian stopped defending his father after that.
He also stopped idolizing him.
The change was quieter.
He removed one photograph of Matteo from his desk.
Not all of them.
Just the one from the first charity rally.
Raffaele noticed but did not mention it.
Vanessa reacted differently.
When Caroline showed her the audit findings, she became furious at Grant.
“You told me Matteo approved everything.”
“He did.”
“You made it sound legitimate.”
Grant shrugged.
“He kept me out of trouble.”
“Once.”
Grant looked at his sister.
“That’s what family does.”
Vanessa stared at him.
For years, that sentence would have controlled her.
Now it sounded different.
She had used the same logic when she helped him.
Raffaele used it when he ignored oversight.
Matteo used it when he hid the first theft.
Grant had simply become the man most willing to exploit the rule everyone else lived by.
Vanessa asked Caroline for a separate attorney.
That ended her alliance with Grant.
It did not repair her marriage.
Raffaele made that clear.
“You helped him steal.”
“I know.”
“You used Lily to bait Adrian.”
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.”
“You practiced humiliating her.”
Her voice weakened.
“I know.”
He waited for an excuse.
None came.
Then Vanessa said something unexpected.
“I hated how much Lily trusted Adrian.”
Raffaele looked at her.
“She’d run to him before me. She’d ask him for snacks. Let him brush her hair. If she got hurt, she wanted you or Adrian.”
“You were jealous of a child.”
“Yes.”
The honesty was ugly.
But useful.
“I kept thinking if I could make her more obedient, she’d finally treat me like her mother.”
Raffaele’s expression hardened.
“Claire is her mother.”
“I know that now.”
“No. You knew it then.”
Vanessa began crying.
Raffaele did not comfort her.
Truth could explain cruelty.
It could not undo it.
Then Caroline entered with a message.
Grant’s attorneys were offering repayment and cooperation.
But only if the charity agreed not to refer the audit findings outside the family.
Raffaele read the offer.
The old Moretti solution.
Money returned.
Reputation protected.
