Chapter 10

The auditors found the answer in bank records Matteo’s estate had retained.
Matteo had not been stealing charity money for himself.
He had discovered Grant doing it.
Years earlier, Grant’s company supplied motorcycles and event equipment to several Moretti charity rallies.
Grant padded invoices.
Small amounts at first.
Matteo noticed.
Instead of reporting him, Matteo confronted him privately.
Grant offered repayment.
Then Claire became dangerously ill during her pregnancy with Lily.
Raffaele was consumed by hospital decisions and refused offers of financial help because he believed he could handle everything himself.
Matteo knew better.
He made a terrible compromise.
He forced Grant to repay stolen charity money by covering some of Claire’s uncovered medical expenses and later replacing the equivalent funds through discounted rally services.
On paper, Matteo approved invoices that looked inflated.
In reality, he was trying to balance money Grant had already taken without exposing either Grant or Raffaele.
It was informal.
Improper.
And impossible to audit cleanly after Matteo died.
Three earlier clues changed meaning.
Grant had been connected to charity billing long before Vanessa married Raffaele.
Vanessa had given him emergency authority because he told her Matteo had trusted him with those expenses.
And Grant reacted so violently to Adrian’s questions because the teenager had unknowingly started uncovering a history involving his own father.
But Matteo’s solution had created the opening Grant needed.
After Matteo died, there was nobody left who understood the arrangement.
Grant began using the same inflated invoices again.
This time he kept the money.
When Vanessa discovered his financial trouble, Grant told her a carefully edited version:
Matteo had always allowed him to use rally billing when necessary.
Vanessa believed she was continuing an old family practice.
Then she helped Grant expand it.
Raffaele sat across from the auditors with Matteo’s notes spread before him.
His dead brother had tried to protect him from financial embarrassment during Claire’s illness.
By doing so, he had protected Grant from exposure.
And Grant had spent years hiding behind Matteo’s reputation.
Adrian stood in the doorway.
He had heard enough.
“So Dad knew.”
Raffaele looked at him.
“Yes.”
“He covered it up.”
“Yes.”
Adrian’s eyes filled, but he refused to wipe them.
“Was he a thief?”
Raffaele answered carefully.
“No.”
Then he added the part Adrian deserved.
“But he made a bad decision because he thought protecting family mattered more than doing it correctly.”

Adrian looked down.
Raffaele realized the sentence described nearly every adult in the story.
