Chapter 5

The first hidden truth came from Vanessa herself.

Not voluntarily.

Caroline requested family credit-card and event-planning records because several rally expenses had been billed through Vanessa’s household account.

Vanessa’s attorney objected.

Then offered a private meeting.

She arrived without Grant.

Raffaele noticed that immediately.

They met in Caroline’s downtown office.

Vanessa wore no wedding ring.

Raffaele did not ask whether that was symbolic or strategic.

Caroline began.

“Did you know your brother was overbilling the charity?”

Vanessa looked at the table.

“I knew he was moving money.”

“How much?”

“I didn’t know.”

“Where?”

“He said he needed temporary cash flow.”

Raffaele’s voice stayed low.

“For what?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“His business was failing.”

Grant’s motorcycle security and merchandise companies had expanded too fast after the pandemic. He financed equipment, leased warehouse space, and lost two major event contracts.

Vanessa had covered part of his debt personally.

Then her savings ran out.

“So you let him use charity money.”

“I told myself he was borrowing it.”

“From children.”

Her face tightened.

“I know what the charity does.”

“Apparently that didn’t stop you.”

“No.”

It was the first time she did not defend herself.

Caroline asked about Lily.

Vanessa’s shame changed into resistance.

“That wasn’t about the money.”

“Then what was it about?”

Vanessa looked toward Raffaele.

“Adrian.”

Raffaele went still.

“He wouldn’t leave Grant alone. He kept asking questions.”

“So you put a three-year-old on her knees.”

“I wanted Adrian to stop acting like he ran the family.”

“He’s fifteen.”

“He acts like Matteo.”

The name landed hard.

Raffaele’s dead brother.

Vanessa continued.

“Everybody watches Adrian because he’s Matteo’s son. Everybody makes excuses for him. Grant said if Adrian caused trouble publicly, you’d finally see what he’s becoming.”

Raffaele’s voice cooled.

“What did Grant tell you would happen?”

“That Adrian would lose his temper.”

“And the security men?”

Vanessa did not answer.

Raffaele understood enough.

“You knew they were there for him.”

“I knew Grant wanted witnesses.”

“To what?”

“To Adrian attacking someone.”

There it was.

The humiliation of Lily had been deliberate bait.

But Vanessa still looked as if she were hiding something.

Caroline noticed too.

“Why Lily?”

Vanessa whispered, “Because Grant knew Adrian would protect her.”

Raffaele stared at his wife.

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

Then she said the part she had been avoiding.

“He learned that from me.”
