Chapter 13

Caroline coordinated the next steps carefully.

The charity’s independent board received the completed audit.

The organization’s insurers were notified.

Outside counsel handled required referrals regarding suspected financial misconduct.

Grant’s vendor contracts were suspended according to their terms while recovery claims were prepared.

Raffaele did not call favors.

He did not ask employees to forget what they had seen.

He gave a statement about striking Grant and Vanessa at the rally.

His attorney made clear that protecting Lily explained the circumstances but did not erase his choices after immediate danger had passed.

Raffaele accepted that.

Adrian’s school completed its review.

Multiple adult witnesses confirmed a security man grabbed him first.

The school imposed no suspension, but Adrian continued counseling voluntarily.

He told Raffaele he wanted to.

That mattered more than any administrative result.

Vanessa gave investigators and charity counsel access to relevant financial records through her attorney.

Her cooperation helped document Grant’s later transactions.

It also documented her own role.

She moved into a condo near Lincoln Park.

Raffaele began divorce proceedings.

Lily asked only once when Vanessa was coming home.

“Not for a while,” Raffaele said.

“Because boot?”

“Because she hurt you.”

Lily thought about it.

“And Adrian?”

“He lives here.”

“Forever?”

Raffaele smiled faintly.

“Teenagers eventually escape.”

Lily did not understand the joke.

Adrian did.

For the first time in weeks, he laughed.

The final piece of evidence came from one of Grant’s two security men.

Facing questions about why he had been working an unregistered private assignment, he gave a statement through counsel.

Grant had paid both men directly.

Their instruction was not simply to provide security.

They were told to stay close to Adrian and intervene only after the teenager became physical.

One text from Grant read:

Let him make the first move where everyone can see it.

The plan had finally become provable.

Grant had wanted Adrian publicly discredited before the boy could bring the invoice questions to Raffaele.

Vanessa had provided the bait.

Grant had provided the witnesses.

Lily had been treated as a tool by both of them.

Caroline placed the statement in front of Raffaele.

“There’s enough now.”

Raffaele looked at it.

“For what?”

May you like

“To stop arguing about what happened.”

That left only what he intended to do about it.
