Chapter 10

Evelyn’s face changed.

Grant saw it.

The room became completely still.

Valentina placed the medical authorization on the table.

“Why do you have this?”

Evelyn’s chin lifted.

“Because Adelaide asked me to help.”

Adelaide stared at the document.

“I asked you to help with appointments.”

“You signed broader authority.”

“I did not understand this.”

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

Valentina watched her fingers.

One hand had begun rubbing the wedding ring on her left hand.

Fast.

Uneven.

Grant noticed too.

“What did you use it for?”

Evelyn turned toward him.

“Grant—”

His voice lowered.

“What did you use it for?”

She swallowed.

The truth emerged slowly.

Evelyn had begun managing Adelaide’s appointment schedules, clinic paperwork and private accounts after a minor fall eight months earlier.

She discovered the old Northline files.

She also discovered the original eighteen-month termination clause.

Grant did not know about it.

Evelyn did.

And she hid it.

Because if Grant learned that his mother had never intended Northline to continue, he might shut it down.

Evelyn did not want that.

Northline gave Grant men.

Influence.

Money.

A counterweight to Valentina.

Everything Evelyn believed her husband had been denied.

Valentina’s eyes hardened.

“You kept the network alive.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“I protected my husband.”

“No.”

Grant’s voice broke through.

Evelyn turned.

He was staring at her with something close to disbelief.

“You protected the version of me you needed.”

Her eyes filled.

“That isn't fair.”

Grant laughed once.

His breath shook.

“Isn't it?”

Then Adelaide whispered:

“I did the same thing.”

Everyone looked at her.

The elderly woman sat with both hands folded tightly in her lap.

Tears stood in her eyes.

This was the major truth.

Adelaide had manipulated both children from the beginning.

When Valentina’s father died, she feared Grant would challenge his sister and split the family.

So she told Grant what he needed to hear: that Northline was proof his father still considered him essential.

At the same time, she told Valentina that Grant had accepted her leadership voluntarily.

Neither was true.

Adelaide did not trust either child enough to tell them the full succession history.

She managed them.

Separated information.

Balanced resentment.

Every time Grant grew angry, she hinted his moment might still come.

Every time Valentina questioned his loyalty, Adelaide insisted he had chosen family over ambition.

The peace between brother and sister had never been real.

It had been engineered by their mother.

Grant stared at Adelaide.

“You spent five years letting me believe I was waiting for something.”

Adelaide’s voice cracked.

“I was keeping you from destroying each other.”

Valentina’s eyes filled, but her face remained still.

“And instead you made sure we never trusted each other enough to stop needing you.”

Adelaide closed her eyes.

No answer.

Then Grant said the one thing that changed everything again.

“I didn't stage today to take Valentina’s chair.”

Valentina looked at him.

Grant’s eyes moved toward Evelyn.

“I staged it because I found out my wife was expanding Northline without me.”

Evelyn went pale.

Grant continued.

“I needed Valentina angry enough to investigate.”

The garden confrontation had not been only a coup attempt.

Grant had used his own sister’s rage to expose his wife.
