Chapter 13

Adelaide read the sentence silently.
Then again.
Her lips trembled.
Valentina watched her mother’s face.
Grant did too.
For once, neither child looked angry.
They looked tired.
“He knew.”
Adelaide whispered it.
Valentina’s voice was quiet.
“He knew you.”
A tear slipped down Adelaide’s cheek.
She did not wipe it.
“I thought he was wrong.”
Grant laughed softly.
Not cruelly.
Broken.
“Of course you did.”
Adelaide looked at him.
“I thought if I could keep both of you close—”
“You kept us suspicious.”
Grant’s hand tightened around the table edge.
Adelaide turned toward Valentina.
“I was afraid you’d become your father.”
Valentina’s eyes hardened.
“And Grant?”
“I was afraid he already had.”
Grant flinched.
There it was.
The deepest reason.
Adelaide trusted neither child.
So she controlled both.
She called it protection.
Their father had recognized it as manipulation.
The council voted to remove Adelaide from all operational family authority.
Not from the family.
From power.
That distinction mattered.
Adelaide closed her eyes when the vote passed.
For decades she had been the quiet elder whose approval could move men.
Now nobody needed it.
Grant watched.
Valentina wondered whether he felt vindicated.
He looked only sad.
Then Evelyn’s legal team submitted her statement.
She admitted using Adelaide’s medical authorization to access archived Northline documents.
Admitted concealing the termination clause.
Admitted expanding the network.
Admitted helping stage the luncheon confrontation.
But she denied planning physical harm to Adelaide.
The cane swing, she claimed, happened because Adelaide whispered something to her after Leo offered the cupcake.
Valentina frowned.
“What?”
Adelaide looked away.
Valentina noticed.
“Mom.”
Silence.
Grant turned toward her too.
“What did you say?”
Adelaide’s fingers tightened in her lap.
Finally:
“I told Evelyn that once the luncheon ended, I was going to tell Grant everything.”
Evelyn had panicked.
But that was not all.
Adelaide continued.
“I also told her I knew about the divorce attorney.”
Grant stopped breathing.
Valentina looked at him.
May you like
Evelyn had secretly consulted a divorce lawyer three weeks earlier.
She had been preparing to leave Grant even while expanding the army she claimed to be building for him.
