Chapter 8

Valentina did not look at Grant first.

She looked at Adelaide.

Her mother’s face answered before her words did.

“It wasn't that simple.”

Grant pushed his chair back.

His breath came harder.

“That’s exactly what you said every time I asked for clarity.”

Adelaide shook her head.

“You were furious after your father chose Valentina.”

“He didn't choose her.”

The room went silent.

Valentina’s gaze sharpened.

Grant looked toward her.

“Dad never named you alone.”

Adelaide stood.

“Stop.”

Grant ignored her.

“He left a provisional structure.”

Valentina turned toward her mother.

“What is he talking about?”

Adelaide’s hands closed around the edge of the table.

Her knuckles whitened.

Grant answered.

“Dad wanted you as public head.”

He pointed toward himself.

“And me controlling enforcement until the transition settled.”

Valentina stared.

She had never heard this.

Adelaide whispered:

“Your father was dying. He drafted several versions.”

Grant laughed bitterly.

“There’s always another version when the truth gets inconvenient.”

Valentina’s voice became cold.

“Show me.”

Adelaide looked at her.

“Valentina—”

“Show me.”

The old succession files were retrieved.

One draft did exactly what Grant claimed.

Valentina would become formal leader.

Grant would retain operational control over several legacy crews for eighteen months.

But the final signed directive was different.

Valentina had full authority.

Grant reported to her.

Grant stared at the final version.

His breathing changed.

Adelaide touched his arm.

He jerked away.

“You told me he still wanted the first structure.”

Adelaide’s eyes filled.

“You were twenty-six and furious.”

“I was thirty-four.”

“You were ready to walk out with half the old crews.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

There.

Adelaide had lied because she feared a split.

She told Valentina Grant had accepted the final succession.

She told Grant his father privately still wanted him as a balancing force.

Then created Northline to keep him invested.

One lie for each child.

Both designed to prevent war.

Valentina stood between them.

Her own mother had manipulated the siblings into cooperating.

The family survived.

The resentment did too.

Then the missing capo, Anthony Caruso, called.

His voice was strained.

“I’m not running.”

Valentina looked toward the phone.

“Then where are you?”

“At the old lakeside house.”

“Why?”

A long pause.

“Because Grant wasn't the first person Adelaide promised Northline to.”

Adelaide went white.

May you like

Anthony continued.

“Your mother offered it to me before she ever offered it to him.”
