Chapter 14

Grant met Evelyn in a neutral office.
Valentina did not attend at first.
Grant asked her to come only after thirty minutes.
When she entered, Evelyn was crying.
Grant was not.
That worried Valentina more.
His hands lay flat on the table.
Completely still.
“You were leaving me.”
Evelyn looked down.
“Yes.”
“While building Northline in my name.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her breathing broke.
“Because I thought if I left before you had enough power, you’d fall apart.”
Grant stared at her.
Evelyn continued.
“I spent years telling you Valentina stole your life.”
Her eyes filled.
“And then I realized I was the one making sure you could never build another one.”
Silence.
Grant looked away.
For years Evelyn had fed his resentment because resentment kept him dependent on a future victory.
If Grant accepted being Valentina’s brother rather than her rival, Evelyn feared he would eventually ask what their marriage was built around.
Shared anger.
Shared ambition.
Shared enemies.
Not enough else.
Grant’s voice became quiet.
“So you built me an army as a goodbye gift?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I built you something I thought no one could take away.”
Valentina watched her brother’s jaw tighten.
Then loosen.
He removed his wedding ring.
Placed it on the table.
No dramatic throw.
No threat.
Evelyn looked at it.
Her face collapsed.
Grant’s voice came low.
“You loved the man I became when I was angry.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“And I let you.”
That answer belonged to both of them.
Their marriage did not end in the room.
Lawyers would handle that.
But the alliance ended there.
Afterward Valentina met Adelaide alone.
Her mother sat beside the estate garden window.
Leo was outside playing under supervision.
Adelaide watched him.
“I almost got him hurt.”
Valentina said nothing.
“I almost got both of you hurt.”
Still nothing.
Adelaide’s hands trembled.
“I kept thinking if I could control the truth, I could control the outcome.”
Valentina finally spoke.
“And now?”
Adelaide looked at her daughter.
“Now I know control was the thing destroying us.”
Valentina’s eyes softened.
Only slightly.
Then the family attorney entered with a sealed recording recovered from her father’s private archive.
Adelaide recognized the label.
Her face went white.
“What?”
Valentina looked at her.
Adelaide whispered:
“He recorded that the night before he died.”

The file was addressed jointly to Valentina and Grant.
Neither sibling had ever heard it.
