Chapter 11

Valentina stared at Grant for several seconds.

Then she laughed.

Quietly.

Coldly.

“You had my son used as bait.”

Grant’s expression tightened.

“I didn't know Evelyn would involve Leo.”

“But you planned the confrontation.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted me to hit you.”

His eyes lowered.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Grant’s breath left slowly.

“Because if I accused Evelyn privately, she’d destroy the Northline records before I could prove anything.”

Valentina stepped closer.

“So you chose a public explosion.”

“I knew you’d investigate everything afterward.”

Her voice dropped.

“You trusted my temper more than you trusted me.”

Grant looked at her.

Pain flickered across his face.

“Yes.”

That honesty hurt more than another lie.

Valentina turned away.

Her hands were trembling now.

She clasped them behind her back.

Adelaide saw.

So did Grant.

No one commented.

Evelyn finally spoke.

“You think he’s innocent?”

Valentina turned.

“No.”

Evelyn blinked.

“He manipulated the event.”

Valentina pointed toward Leo’s abandoned cupcake wrapper on the evidence table.

“He let my child become part of it.”

Then toward Adelaide.

“He let our mother be humiliated.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“I never told you to swing the cane.”

Evelyn’s eyes flashed.

“You knew I was angry.”

“I didn't know you'd attack her.”

“You knew exactly who I was.”

The sentence landed.

Grant looked away.

Evelyn continued.

“You've spent years telling me Valentina got everything because Adelaide chose her.”

“That doesn't excuse—”

“No.”

Evelyn’s voice cracked.

“It explains why I stopped believing I had to protect people who never protected you.”

Grant stared.

For the first time, her motive became fully visible.

She did not want Valentina’s chair for herself.

She wanted her husband to stop living as second place in his own family.

She turned resentment into entitlement.

Then the forensic accountant entered.

Northline’s expansion money had not gone into Evelyn’s personal accounts.

It had funded emergency properties, legal retainers, weapons storage, transport and salary guarantees for men who would follow Grant if the Carbone family split.

Grant read the report.

His face changed.

“You prepared for war.”

Evelyn whispered:

“I prepared for the day Valentina came for you.”

Valentina looked toward her.

Evelyn’s eyes were wet now.

But defiant.

The tragedy was simple.

May you like

She had spent so long preparing for a war that did not exist—

she finally created one.
