Chapter 1

The bright, mid-morning sunlight poured through the towering stained-glass windows of the memorial chapel, casting vivid, jewel-toned colors across the polished mahogany pews. The cinematic, clear lighting offered no shadows, illuminating the pristine white lilies that flanked the altar. Standing beside the small, closed white casket was twenty-eight-year-old Emma Carter. Her fair, rosy skin was starkly pale against her fitted black mourning dress. A small, elegant funeral fascinator rested in her hair, and her pearl earrings caught the brilliant light. In her trembling hands, she clutched a framed portrait of her six-year-old daughter, Sofia. The little girl in the photograph had the same bright eyes and rosy cheeks as her mother.
In the front pew sat sixty-four-year-old Margaret Carter. The family matriarch wore a flawless, expensive mourning dress, her heavy pearl necklace and earrings gleaming. Margaret’s posture was rigidly perfect, projecting an aura of untouchable American aristocracy.
The heavy wooden doors at the back of the chapel suddenly burst open.
The soft sounds of weeping ceased instantly. The glaring, bright daylight from outside spilled into the aisle, framing two figures whose attire was a grotesque insult to the solemn room.
Vanessa and Daniel Carter strode down the center aisle, their matching luxury suitcases rolling loudly against the stone floor. Thirty-five-year-old Vanessa wore a vibrant, brightly colored resort dress, oversized designer sunglasses pushed back into her hair, and heavy gold jewelry clinking at her wrists. Her fair skin was flushed with the heat of travel. Beside her, thirty-eight-year-old Daniel wore a crisp tropical linen shirt, tailored shorts, and expensive loafers, a luxury watch catching the light. A bright yellow St. Lucia airline tag swung wildly from the handle of his suitcase.
Vanessa stopped halfway down the aisle, looking around impatiently. She huffed, her voice breathless, defensive, and disturbingly casual, echoing through the silent, brightly lit chapel.
"Traffic from the airport was an absolute nightmare," Vanessa sighed, adjusting the strap of her designer bag. She glanced toward the front of the room, her brow furrowing in irritation. "Where is she?"
Emma rose slowly from her chair beside the casket. The grief had hollowed out the soft contours of her beautiful, refined face, leaving behind an expression carved from pure ice. She clutched Sofia’s portrait tighter to her chest, her knuckles turning white.
She stared directly at Vanessa, her gaze piercing through the bright, airy room. Every mourner in the pews froze, holding their breath as Daniel’s confident, arrogant stride completely vanished.

"In the coffin," Emma said. Her American accent was crisp, her voice ice-cold and laced with absolute devastation.
Vanessa’s mouth fell open, her glossy lips parting in a silent, horrified gasp. The rosy flush on her cheeks drained away, leaving her looking sickly and pale under the unforgiving chapel lights. Daniel stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting toward the small white box at the front of the altar.
