Chapter 9

Daniel cowered on the floor, clutching his broken wrist, blood pouring from his shattered nose onto the immaculate white carpet. The arrogant, controlling man from the chapel was completely gone, replaced by a whimpering, pathetic coward under the bright, unforgiving lights of the guest room.

"Emma, please!" Daniel begged, scrambling backward against the door. His fair skin was a mess of crimson. "Don't kill me! I'll confess! I'll tell them Margaret planned the cover-up!"

Emma stared down at him, the heavy brass poker still gripped tightly in her hands. The urge to bring it down on his skull was a physical, burning ache in her chest. She wanted to shatter him exactly the way he had shattered her world.

But as she looked at him, shivering and bleeding, she realized that killing him in this room would only make Margaret’s narrative true. She would be the psychotic widow, and the Carter family's wealth would bury the truth forever.

Emma lowered the poker. "I'm not going to kill you, Daniel. Death is too quick for what you did."

Suddenly, the heavy oak door swung open, knocking Daniel forward.

Margaret Carter stood in the doorway, dressed in a silk nightgown, a heavy wool robe wrapped around her shoulders. Her face was a mask of cold, aristocratic fury. Behind her stood two of the estate's massive, heavily armed security guards.

"Secure her," Margaret commanded sharply, pointing a diamond-clad finger at Emma.

The two guards lunged into the room. Emma swung the fire poker, but the men were professionals. One deflected the blow, while the other grabbed her from behind, wrapping his massive arms around her, pinning her to the spot. The blue folder dropped from her hands, scattering the incriminating documents across the floor.

Margaret stepped into the brightly lit room, looking down at Daniel with absolute disgust. "You are a pathetic excuse for a man, Daniel. You couldn't even handle a grieving widow."

"Mother, she broke my wrist!" Daniel whined, struggling to his feet.

Margaret ignored him. She bent down with perfect grace, gathering the scattered documents from the floor. She tapped the papers into a neat stack, a chilling, satisfied smile touching her lips as she looked at Emma.

"You really thought you could outsmart me in my own house, Emma?" Margaret asked, her voice dripping with aristocratic condescension. "You broke in. You assaulted my son. You are clearly suffering a violent psychotic break over the tragic loss of your daughter."

"I have the audio, Margaret," Emma spat, struggling fruitlessly against the guard's grip. "I have the audio of Daniel and Vanessa killing her. I uploaded it to a secure server. If I disappear, it goes straight to the FBI."

Margaret’s smile didn't waver. "Let them listen to it. I have three expert witnesses who will testify the audio is AI-generated deepfake revenge porn. With my resources, this folder is the only physical proof of a motive. And I am going to burn it in this very fireplace."

"You can't burn the truth," Emma seethed, her eyes blazing.

"I can burn whatever I please," Margaret stated softly. She turned to the guards. "Take her to the basement. Keep her restrained until the private ambulance arrives. The psychiatric facility is expecting her."

"Let her go, Margaret."

The voice came from the shattered window.

Everyone in the room turned. Standing on the balcony, bathed in the bright security lights of the estate, was Detective Miller. He held his badge in one hand, and his service weapon drawn and aimed directly at Margaret's chest. Behind him, red and blue police lights began to flash intensely across the manicured lawns.
