Chapter 10

The bright, intense red and blue lights of the police cruisers flooded the guest room through the shattered window, painting frantic, cinematic colors across the pale faces of the Carter family. Detective Miller stepped carefully through the broken glass, his weapon steady.
"Drop your weapons and release her," Miller commanded the estate guards. "Now!"
The private security men, realizing the gravity of aiming weapons at a police officer, slowly raised their hands and backed away from Emma. She stumbled forward, catching her breath, her eyes locked on Margaret.
"Detective," Margaret said, her voice attempting to regain its authoritative composure, though her hands trembled slightly as she clutched the blue folder. "This is an illegal entry. We are the victims of a home invasion. My daughter-in-law is violently unstable."
"Save it, Mrs. Carter," Miller said, stepping into the room. "We found the USB drive Emma left in a drop-box for me an hour ago. The audio experts already ran a preliminary sweep. It’s authentic. We have the confession on tape. And the warrants for your financial ledgers were signed by a federal judge ten minutes ago."
Daniel let out a pathetic, high-pitched whimper, sinking to his knees on the white carpet. His tropical vacation was over; the reality of a murder charge had finally crushed him.
"You have no jurisdiction here to seize these papers," Margaret snapped, clutching the blue folder tighter against her chest. "I demand to call my attorney."
"You can call him from the precinct," Miller replied, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "Margaret Carter, Daniel Carter, you are under arrest for the murder of Sofia Carter, obstruction of justice, and financial fraud."
As the backup officers flooded into the room, slapping cuffs on a weeping Daniel, Margaret remained perfectly rigid. She did not cry. She did not fight. She offered her wrists to the officer with a chilling, terrifying grace, her pearls clinking softly against the metal cuffs.
Emma stepped forward, picking up the blue folder that Margaret had been forced to drop on the desk. She held it tightly against her chest, the exact way she had held her daughter's portrait at the funeral.
"It's over, Margaret," Emma whispered, her voice cold and absolute. "You lost."
Margaret stopped in the doorway, flanked by two police officers. She turned her head slowly, looking at Emma under the bright, unforgiving lights of the hallway. Her fair skin was pale, but her eyes burned with an unholy, vicious light.
"It is never over, Emma," Margaret whispered, her voice a low, venomous hiss that only Emma could hear. "Daniel and Vanessa are fools. But you forget who built this empire. I am going to jail, yes. But the people I launder this money for? The people whose millions are tied up in that folder? They don't use lawyers, Emma. They use ghosts. You sleep with one eye open for the rest of your short life."
Margaret turned and walked down the hall, head held high, looking every inch a dark queen heading to her exile.
Emma stood alone in the bright, ruined guest room. The police were cataloging the blood on the baseboards, taking photos of the shattered window. Detective Miller placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"You did it, Emma," Miller said softly. "You got justice for Sofia."
Emma looked out the window into the dark, sprawling grounds of the estate. The flashing police lights offered a sense of finality, but Margaret’s final words echoed like a death knell in her mind. She had burned the house down, but the monsters who lived in the ashes were still out there.
She gripped the blue folder tighter, her rosy skin pale in the moonlight. The war for Sofia was over. But the war for her own survival had just begun.
