Chapter 4

The interior of the police precinct was brightly lit by harsh fluorescent bulbs, offering no shadows to hide within. Emma sat rigidly in an uncomfortable metal chair inside the interrogation room, her fitted mourning dress impeccably neat, her fair skin pale but resolute. Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with sharp, analytical eyes, sat across from her.
"Mrs. Carter," Miller began, leaning forward and resting his hands on the metal table. "The digital forensics team has authenticated the video from your home security cloud. It hasn't been altered. But I have to ask you... how did you find it? Your mother-in-law claims the internal cameras were deactivated for maintenance the week of the incident."
"They were supposed to be," Emma said, her voice steady and clear. "Margaret controls the master security system at the estate. When I was hospitalized for exhaustion two weeks ago, I left Sofia in their care. Margaret told me the cameras were off. But Sofia had a tablet. A smart toy."
Miller raised an eyebrow. "A toy?"
"It’s a motion-activated learning device," Emma explained, her throat tightening as she pictured her daughter's favorite gadget. "It connects to my personal cloud account. I didn't think about it until this morning when I was looking through her digital photo albums. The tablet was sitting on the console table in the hallway. It caught everything."
Miller sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "It’s damning footage of abuse, Emma. But it doesn't prove they killed her. The coroner's report ruled Sofia's death as accidental drowning in the estate's ornamental lake."
"Sofia was terrified of the water," Emma insisted, her voice rising slightly, the fierce, protective mother breaking through her elegant refinement. "She would never go near that lake alone. And look at the video, Detective. Look at the timestamp. Daniel and Vanessa are carrying her toward the east wing. The lake is in the opposite direction. They did something to her, panicked, and threw her in the water to cover it up."
"We are bringing them in for questioning based on the assault," Miller promised. "But Margaret Carter has already dispatched a team of high-powered attorneys. They are claiming Daniel was simply restraining an out-of-control child. Without physical evidence of murder, they will walk on bail."
"Then find the evidence," Emma demanded, her icy composure returning. "Search the east wing of the estate. Search Daniel’s private study."
"We need a warrant for that, which requires probable cause beyond a slap," Miller cautioned. "Margaret Carter is a very powerful woman in this city. If we miss, she will bury this department."
Emma stood up, smoothing the front of her black dress. Her pearl earrings caught the harsh overhead light. "If you won't find the evidence, Detective, then I will."
"Emma, don't do anything reckless," Miller warned, standing up as well. "If they are responsible for your daughter's death, they won't hesitate to hurt you."

"I have already lost everything that matters to me," Emma said softly, her eyes blazing with a terrifying, absolute resolve. "I have nothing left to be afraid of."
She turned and walked out of the bright interrogation room, leaving the detective staring after her, deeply unsettled by the quiet, devastating power of a grieving mother.
