Chapter 3

Chaos erupted in the bright, sunlit chapel. The polite murmurs of the wealthy congregation exploded into shocked gasps and frantic whispers. Several guests stood up from the polished mahogany pews, their formal attire rustling loudly as they craned their necks to see the glowing screen in Emma's hand.

Margaret Carter shot up from the front pew. At sixty-four, the matriarch’s fair face was a mask of cold, calculating fury. Her pearl necklace swung wildly as she marched toward the altar, positioning herself between Emma and the horrified crowd.

"Turn that device off immediately, Emma!" Margaret hissed, her voice sharp and commanding. "You are causing a hysterical scene in front of our guests. Give me the phone."

"Don't come any closer to me, Margaret," Emma warned, taking a deliberate step back so her shoulder brushed the edge of the small white casket. She kept the phone raised, the video still looping its damning evidence. "You all swore to me she wandered off into the woods while they were packing for their trip. You swore it was a tragic accident."

"It was an accident!" Vanessa shrieked from the center aisle, her voice cracking as she abandoned her luxury suitcase. "She was throwing a tantrum! We were just trying to calm her down! We put her in her room, and she snuck out!"

"You call striking a six-year-old child calming her down?" Emma retorted, her icy composure never wavering. "The police are already on their way, Vanessa. I forwarded the video to the lead detective ten minutes before you walked through those doors."

Daniel’s panic finally broke through his controlling facade. His broad, masculine shoulders tensed as he lunged forward, his dress shoes slipping slightly on the marble floor. "You stupid bitch, what have you done?! That video is taken entirely out of context!"

Before Daniel could close the distance, the heavy chapel doors at the rear opened again. Two uniformed police officers, their radios crackling in the quiet, bright space, stepped inside. They took one look at the standoff at the altar and immediately moved down the aisle.

"Daniel Carter, Vanessa Carter," the lead officer said, his hand resting cautiously on his utility belt. "We need you to step outside with us. Right now."

"Officers, this is a grotesque misunderstanding," Margaret intervened, turning her aristocratic charm on the police. "My daughter-in-law is suffering a mental break due to her profound grief. She has fabricated evidence to punish my son."

"We'll sort it out at the precinct, ma'am," the officer replied, grabbing Daniel’s arm.

Daniel violently yanked his arm away. "Get your hands off me! I have lawyers on retainer who will strip you of your badge!"

"Daniel, stop," Margaret ordered sharply, her eyes flashing with a silent warning. She turned to the officers. "My son and his wife will cooperate fully. They have nothing to hide."

As Daniel and a weeping Vanessa were escorted out into the bright sunlight, Emma stood perfectly still. Margaret turned back to her, stepping so close that Emma could smell her heavy, expensive perfume.

"You have destroyed this family," Margaret whispered, her voice dripping with venom. "Daniel will be out on bail by sunset. You are playing a game you cannot survive, Emma."

"I'm not playing a game, Margaret," Emma replied, her voice dead calm. "I am burning the house down."
