Chapter 12 - WHY VICTORIA NEEDED TO BE FIRST
Victoria finally gave a full interview during the custody evaluation.
Her explanation did not excuse her.
But it made her understandable.
She had grown up in a home where belonging was unstable.
Her father left.
Her mother remarried twice.
Every new marriage created new rules about who mattered, who stayed, and who got displaced.
Victoria learned early that security came from becoming indispensable to the most powerful person in the room.
By adulthood, she had turned that fear into a worldview.
Relationships were rankings.
Attention was proof.
Children competed.
If Raffaele loved Noah first, Victoria believed she would eventually be disposable.
If Sophie needed her too much, Sophie became another demand.
So Victoria built a future where nobody could compete with her daily.
Sophie with Daniel.
Noah with Margaret at another property.
Raffaele with Victoria.
She called it “creating a stable marriage.”
The evaluator called it coercive control.
At a formal mediation, Victoria finally faced Raffaele.
No bodyguards.
No relatives.
No audience.
“You made me feel like Isabella was still in every room,” she said.
Raffaele stared at her.
“She’s Noah’s mother.”
“She was dead.”
“That doesn’t erase her.”
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“And I was supposed to live in her house and raise her son while everyone compared me to her?”
“No.”
Raffaele’s voice remained calm.
“You were supposed to decide whether you could love a man who already had a son.”
Victoria looked away.
“You never needed me.”
“That was your problem.”
Her eyes returned to him.
“You wanted to be needed badly enough that you made two children afraid they could be sent away.”
She had no answer.
Raffaele stood.
The mediation had achieved what it needed.
