Chapter 14 - THE CHAIR RAFFAELE LEFT EMPTY

By early summer, Victoria’s custody case had settled into a structured arrangement.
Daniel became Sophie’s primary residential parent.
Victoria received supervised visitation while completing court-ordered parenting work and individual therapy.
She was not declared evil.
She was not erased from her daughter’s life.
She was simply no longer allowed to make Sophie responsible for managing her fears.
A separate civil agreement resolved the engagement dispute.
Neither side paid the other to disappear.
The garden-party footage remained private except where legally required.
Raffaele refused several suggestions that he leak it.
Humiliation had started the problem.
He would not pretend more humiliation was justice.
Noah improved quickly once his routines stabilized.
He asked for dessert again.
He stopped checking whether Margaret was allowed to sit.
He still became tense when adults grabbed things from his hands.
Dr. Carter said that might fade.
Or it might simply become one of the memories his body kept longer than his mind.
Raffaele accepted that without demanding a quick repair.
The estate garden was prepared for Noah’s fourth birthday.
Smaller guest list.
No business associates.
No capos holding meetings near the children.
No photographers except one person Noah already knew.
The long dessert table remained.
Margaret looked at it and laughed.
“You kept the table.”
“It didn’t do anything wrong.”
She pointed toward the children’s table.
One chair sat empty beside Noah.
“Who’s that for?”
Raffaele looked at it.
“Sophie.”
Margaret’s expression softened.
“Is she coming?”
“No.”
Not yet.
Daniel and the therapist both felt the children should have more time apart before reconnecting.
Raffaele respected that.
Noah had asked anyway.
So Raffaele left the chair there.
Not as pressure.
May you like
Not as a promise.
Simply as a place that would exist if both children ever decided they wanted it.
