Chapter 17

The first complaint reached Raffaele through the kitchen.

Not his office.

Not a meeting.

The kitchen.

One of the new child-care managers found a handwritten seating list beneath a tray before Sunday lunch.

MARCONI FAMILY — MAIN TABLE

Raffaele Marconi

Noah Marconi

Alessio Ferraro

Dominic Ferretti

Senior family guests

HOUSEHOLD / NON-FAMILY — SECOND TABLE

Margaret Bell

Professional child-care staff

Approved visitors

Sophie Hale’s name had been added at the bottom in different handwriting.

Then crossed out.

Raffaele read the paper twice.

“Who made this?”

Nobody answered.

The kitchen staff looked frightened in a way they had not since the independent assessment.

That told him more than a name would have.

“Everybody keeps their job for answering.”

He had established that rule months earlier.

Apparently rules had to survive longer than the man who announced them.

An assistant finally spoke.

“Mr. Ferraro’s office sent it.”

Alessio Ferraro had worked beside Raffaele’s father before Raffaele controlled anything.

He was sixty-three.

Disciplined.

Traditional.

Useful in exactly the ways powerful organizations rewarded.

He had also been one of the senior men most insulted when outside child-safety professionals entered the estate.

Raffaele called him downtown.

Alessio did not deny the list.

“It is a seating chart.”

“My house does not use rank at children’s meals anymore.”

“That is precisely the problem.”

Raffaele leaned back.

Alessio continued.

“You allowed social workers to inspect private rooms. You separated household security from family authority. Men who have protected this name for thirty years now need permission from a child-care administrator to walk through a corridor.”

“Yes.”

“You say that like it is reasonable.”

“It is.”

Alessio looked almost disappointed.

“And now the Hale girl is returning.”

“She met Noah in a public garden.”

“She will return.”

“If both children want that.”

Alessio’s expression changed at the wording.

Children deciding.

To him, it sounded like adults abandoning responsibility.

“Sophie Hale is not a Marconi.”

“Neither is Margaret.”

“Margaret is staff.”

“No.”

Raffaele’s answer came immediately.

“She works here. That is not the total definition of her relationship to my son.”

Alessio exhaled.

“This is what I mean. Categories exist for a reason.”

Raffaele glanced at the seating chart.

“Victoria believed that too.”

The comparison offended him.

“Do not compare me to that woman.”

“She decided children needed to know where they ranked.”

“I am talking about family structure.”

“She called it structure.”

“I am talking about blood.”

“She talked about belonging.”

Alessio stood.

“You are confusing cruelty with order.”

“And you are confusing order with entitlement.”

The meeting ended without shouting.

That disturbed Alessio more than anger would have.

Two days later, Noah came into breakfast carrying his dinosaur book.

A young security man opened the chair beside Raffaele.

Noah did not sit.

He pointed toward another chair.

“Margaret sits there.”

“She isn’t here today,” Raffaele said.

Noah frowned.

Then repeated a sentence Raffaele had never heard from him.

“Blood sits first.”

Every person in the room became still.

Raffaele crouched beside his son.

“Who told you that?”

Noah looked confused by the seriousness of the question.

“Uncle Alessio.”

Alessio was not Noah’s uncle.

Children in the organization had been taught to use the title for trusted senior men.

“When?”

“He showed pictures.”

“What pictures?”

“Grandpas.”

Raffaele’s chest tightened.

The old men were not only objecting to reforms among themselves.

Someone had begun teaching Noah the hierarchy directly.

Victoria had coached Sophie to test him.

Now men from his own world were coaching his son to inherit the system Raffaele had supposedly changed.

Different purpose.

Same method.

Adults putting words into a child’s mouth until the child believed the words belonged there.

Raffaele stood.

Breakfast remained untouched.

“Find out exactly who has been spending time with my son.”

This time, the investigation would not begin with Victoria.

It would begin with his own name.
