Chapter 13 - MARGARET WOULD NOT LET HIM TURN HER INTO FAMILY PROPERTY
The independent assessment recommended significant changes to Noah’s environment.
Not because Raffaele had directly harmed him.
Because too many adults around him operated under rigid hierarchy.
Margaret was relieved.
Several senior household men were insulted.
Raffaele implemented the recommendations anyway.
Noah’s daily care became separate from adult business.
Large private dinners moved away from the residence.
Staff members responsible for Noah answered to a professional child-care manager, not to capos or family elders.
Margaret remained part of his life.
But she changed something too.
“I’m reducing my hours.”
Raffaele looked surprised.
“Why?”
“I’m fifty-six.”
She smiled.
“I’ve worked in this house since before you knew how to host dinner without starting an argument.”
“That was last year.”
“Exactly.”
He almost laughed.
Margaret continued.
“I love Noah. But loving him doesn’t mean I become another person who never leaves because the Marconis need me.”
The sentence landed.
Raffaele nodded.
“What do you want?”
“Three days a week.”
“Done.”
“And I sit at his birthday parties.”
Raffaele looked at her.
“You always could.”
“No.”
Margaret shook her head.
“I always worked them.”
Another small hierarchy he had never noticed.
“Then next time you sit.”
“Good.”
She walked away.
Raffaele stood alone in the kitchen understanding that changing a family was not one dramatic decision.
It was chairs.
Schedules.
Who served.
