Chapter 1 - THE CHILD WHO REFUSED TO LEAVE

Victoria did not leave quietly.
She stood beside the reception sofa with one hand against the cushion, staring at Raffaele as though she could not understand how the evening had turned against her.
“You’re throwing me out over discipline?”
Raffaele kept Eli behind his right leg.
Ava stood on his left.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“I’m throwing you out because you put your hands on my son.”
Victoria pointed toward Eli.
“He is spoiled because everyone in this house treats him like some little prince.”
“He’s three.”
“And already learning he can manipulate you.”
Eli pressed closer to his father.
Raffaele saw it.
So did several guests.
Victoria noticed the room had stopped belonging to her.
She turned toward Ava.
“Get your coat.”
Ava did not move.
“Ava.”
The girl’s fingers tightened around Eli’s hand.
“I don’t want to go.”
Victoria’s expression changed.
Not grief.
Not confusion.
Alarm.
“You’re coming home with me.”
Ava shook her head.
Victoria crossed the room.
Raffaele stepped between them.
“She said no.”
“She is my daughter.”
That stopped him.
Victoria was cruel.
But legally, she was also right.
Raffaele had no parental rights over Ava.
He could remove Victoria from his home.
He could protect Eli.
He could not simply decide another woman’s child belonged with him.
Ava looked up at him.
“Please.”
That single word cut through him more cleanly than any threat in the room.
Victoria reached for her daughter again.
Ava flinched before Victoria even touched her.
Raffaele saw that too.
He looked toward Thomas Greer, the Caruso family’s legitimate outside attorney, who had been attending the reception with his wife.
“Tom.”
Greer understood immediately.
“Don’t physically prevent Victoria from leaving with her daughter unless there is an immediate threat. Call local police and child protective services. Let them document what happened here.”
Victoria laughed.
“You’re calling CPS on me?”
Raffaele looked at Ava.
“No.”
Then back at Victoria.
“Your daughter is.”
Twenty-three adults had just watched Ava recoil from her own mother.
Several had watched Victoria shove her.
Raffaele would not convert that into a private Mafia solution.
Police arrived first.
Then an emergency child-welfare worker.
Ava was interviewed away from Victoria.
Raffaele was not allowed inside.
Neither were his men.
For forty-three minutes he stood in his own hallway unable to control anything.
He hated every second.
When the caseworker finally emerged, she did not return Ava to Victoria.
Instead, she contacted Ava’s maternal aunt, Melissa Hayes, who lived twenty minutes away and was already listed as an emergency caregiver in Ava’s school records.
Victoria’s face collapsed.
“You cannot do this.”
The caseworker remained calm.
“This is a temporary safety arrangement until we understand what Ava disclosed.”
Raffaele looked toward the little girl.
Ava was staring at the floor.
“What did she say?” Victoria demanded.
Nobody answered her.
But as Melissa prepared to leave with Ava, the girl ran back toward Eli.
She hugged him tightly.
Then she whispered something Raffaele barely heard.
“You don’t have to do what she says anymore.”
May you like
Raffaele looked at Victoria.
For the first time, he wondered how long this had actually been happening.
