Chapter 11 - THE FATHER WHO HAD TO HEAR IT
Raffaele did not see Ava after the disclosure.
He was still prohibited from contact.
That was probably good.
He would not have known what to say.
Instead, he sat in Dr. Hannah Pierce’s office while she explained something he hated hearing.
“Eli helped Ava because he saw distress.”
Raffaele nodded.
“But don’t romanticize that.”
His eyes narrowed.
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
Hannah leaned forward.
“He is three. It was never his responsibility to rescue another child.”
The words struck harder than accusation.
Raffaele had been quietly proud of Eli.
Proud his son brought food.
Proud he went toward Ava when she cried.
Hannah forced him to see the other side.
A toddler had been placed in situations where he believed a five-year-old needed him.
That was not bravery to celebrate.
It was an adult failure to correct.
Raffaele returned home and ordered several changes immediately.
No child in the estate would be disciplined behind locked doors.
Staff could interrupt any adult if they believed a child was distressed.
No family rank overrode child-safety rules.
And Eli’s therapist—not Raffaele—would decide how much of the recent events Eli needed to revisit.
Victoria was criminally investigated after the evaluator made the mandatory report.
Child-welfare investigators reopened Ava’s old medical and school records.
The case was no longer Victoria versus Raffaele.
It was the state examining Victoria’s treatment of her daughter.
Her motive for attacking Eli became understandable.
