Chapter 15 - THE TWO CHILDREN WHO CHOSE EACH OTHER

Ava returned to the Caruso estate almost nine months after the reception.

Not to live there.

For lunch.

Melissa drove her.

The visit had been approved by both children’s therapists and kept deliberately ordinary.

No capos.

No reception.

No bodyguards standing in doorways.

No formal clothes.

Eli waited near the front steps wearing sneakers and holding a toy dinosaur.

The moment Ava got out of the car, both children stopped.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Eli held out the dinosaur.

“I kept it.”

Ava walked toward him.

“You said I could have it.”

“Yeah.”

She took it.

That was apparently enough to restore diplomatic relations between children.

They ran toward the garden.

Raffaele watched from the terrace with Melissa.

Ava looked healthier.

Still cautious.

But the constant tension in her shoulders had eased.

Victoria had entered a plea in the criminal case weeks earlier. The sentence included probation conditions, mandatory treatment, and restrictions around Ava beyond whatever family court permitted. The outcome was less cinematic than revenge and more useful than it.

Melissa remained Ava’s guardian.

Victoria’s future relationship with her daughter would depend on years of behavior, not promises made in a courtroom.

Raffaele had changed too.

He had not become harmless.

His history had not vanished because he learned something about parenting.

But the estate no longer operated like a place where rank automatically meant obedience.

Several older associates hated the changes.

Some left.

Raffaele let them.

Eli’s childhood mattered more than maintaining traditions that had already failed him once.

After lunch, the children sat beneath an old maple tree sharing crackers.

Eli handed Ava the larger half without being asked.

Ava stared at it.

Then at him.

“You can have it.”

“No. You.”

She smiled.

Raffaele looked away before either child saw what the moment did to him.

Months earlier, Victoria had tried to teach them hierarchy.

Master.

Servant.

Obedience.

Fear.

The children had chosen something much simpler.

Brother.

Sister.

When it was time to leave, Ava hugged Eli first.

Then she approached Raffaele.

She stopped several feet away.

He did not reach for her.

The choice belonged to her.

“Mr. Caruso?”

“Yes?”

“Mom says you ruined our family.”

Raffaele felt Melissa tense beside him.

He answered carefully.

“What do you think?”

Ava looked toward Eli.

“I think it was already bad.”

Raffaele swallowed.

Then Ava asked:

“If Aunt Melissa says yes… can I come back for Eli’s birthday?”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

No hug.

No dramatic declaration that he was her father now.

She simply returned to Melissa and climbed into the car.

Raffaele stood beside Eli as they watched it drive away.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Ava still my sister?”

Raffaele looked down at his son.

The legal answer was easy.

The emotional answer was not.

“She gets to decide what family means to her.”

Eli frowned.

Then said, “I already decided.”

Raffaele smiled.

“I know.”

He lifted his son into his arms and carried him back toward the house.

The case against Victoria was finished.

The wedding was gone.

Both children were safe.

The lies about Eli had been exposed.

The adults who failed to notice had changed the rules that allowed it.

Only one thing remained unresolved:

whether Ava, as she grew older and built a life outside her mother’s control, would still choose the Carusos as part of her family.

May you like

Raffaele did not try to decide for her.

That was the point.
