Chapter 3 - THE GIRL WHO ASKED PERMISSION TO EAT
Raffaele was not allowed to interview Ava.
He accepted that.
The child had enough adults asking questions.
Instead, he focused on Eli.
A pediatric therapist named Dr. Hannah Pierce came to the estate two days later.
Raffaele stayed in the adjacent room while Hannah played with blocks, toy animals, and plastic figures with his son.
No leading questions.
No promises.
No asking a three-year-old to reconstruct adult motives.
Eli talked when he wanted.
Mostly about trucks.
Then Hannah placed two toy children beside a toy table.
Eli picked up the smaller one and made it kneel.
Raffaele felt his stomach turn.
Hannah asked casually, “What’s that one doing?”
“Being good.”
“What makes him good?”
“He listens.”
“Who says that?”
Eli shrugged.
Then he moved another figure beside it.
“Ava doesn’t like it.”
That became the first subtle clue.
Ava had not suddenly decided to defend Eli at the reception.
She had apparently resisted this ritual before.
Meanwhile, Melissa began documenting Ava’s behavior.
The girl asked permission before opening the refrigerator.
She apologized when she laughed too loudly.
She refused to sit on Melissa’s couch until invited.
At dinner, she ate half her food, then wrapped the remaining chicken in a paper napkin and slipped it into her pocket.
Melissa noticed.
“Sweetheart, there’s more food.”
Ava immediately began crying.
“I wasn’t stealing.”
Nobody had accused her of stealing.
The caseworker wrote it down.
Victoria responded through counsel.
She accused Melissa of coaching Ava.
She accused Raffaele of using his influence to interfere with a custody investigation.
She claimed the reception had been “a misunderstanding inflated by a powerful man who became angry after being contradicted.”
That argument was not entirely useless.
Raffaele’s reputation could hurt Ava’s case.
He was a known organized-crime figure who had never been convicted of the worst things associated with his name but had spent decades surrounded by people who had.
Victoria’s lawyer knew exactly how to use that.
A motion was filed asking the court to prohibit Raffaele, his staff, and his associates from contact with Ava while the investigation continued.
The judge granted a temporary restriction.
Raffaele read the order twice.
He could not call Ava.
Could not send gifts.
Could not ask Melissa for updates beyond what child welfare permitted.
Eli noticed first.
“When Ava coming?”
Raffaele had no answer the boy would understand.
“Not yet.”
Eli looked down.
“Mommy Victoria mad?”
“Victoria isn’t coming back.”
“Because Ava talked?”
Raffaele went still.
“No.”
Eli looked up at him.
“Talking makes her mad.”
