Chapter 1

Rocco did not question Noah in front of the reception guests.

That was the first decision he made correctly that night.

The second was ordering every door to remain open while the guests were escorted out.

Nobody was detained.

Nobody was threatened.

But Marcus was separated from Victoria, and neither was allowed near Noah.

Maria brought the boy upstairs.

Ten minutes later, she returned carrying a small hard-shell case.

Noah’s spare hearing aid.

Rocco watched her fit it carefully.

The moment the device was in place, Noah touched his ear as if checking that sound had returned to the world.

Rocco crouched in front of him.

“You okay?”

Noah nodded.

His eyes were still red.

Rocco kept his questions simple.

“What did you hear?”

Noah glanced toward the open bedroom door.

“Victoria and Uncle Marcus.”

Rocco felt his stomach tighten.

“What did they say?”

Noah frowned, trying to remember.

Three-year-olds did not deliver clean witness statements.

They delivered pieces.

“Wedding.”

Rocco waited.

“Papers.”

Another pause.

“Daddy signs.”

Maria looked at Rocco.

He said nothing.

Noah continued.

“Victoria said I stay with her.”

Rocco’s expression changed.

“And Marcus?”

Noah rubbed one eye.

“Uncle Marcus said then money is safe.”

That was all.

No names of accounts.

No detailed conspiracy.

Just fragments.

Wedding.

Papers.

Daddy signs.

Noah stays with Victoria.

Money is safe.

Rocco kissed his son’s forehead.

“That’s enough.”

He did not ask again.

Downstairs, Victoria demanded to speak to him.

Rocco refused.

Instead, he called his attorney, Evelyn Shaw.

She had handled his legitimate estate planning for fourteen years and had spent most of those years telling him things he did not enjoy hearing.

Rocco repeated Noah’s words.

Evelyn went quiet.

Then she asked one question.

“Has Victoria ever discussed adopting Noah?”

Rocco frowned.

“No.”

“Has Marcus recently asked you to update your trust?”

Rocco’s silence answered.

Three weeks earlier, Marcus had mentioned that Rocco’s estate plan was outdated.

Rocco had dismissed him.

Now the conversation no longer felt casual.

He looked toward the broken hearing aid Maria had placed inside a plastic evidence bag.

Victoria said Noah had heard something he wasn’t supposed to hear.

Rocco intended to find out what.

But he was not going to make the mistake of assuming he already knew.
