Chapter 23

Rocco fell in love again when Noah was sixteen.

He told nobody for four months.

Maria discovered it first because Rocco suddenly cared whether his shirts matched his ties.

“This is disturbing.”

“Go away.”

“Who?”

“No one.”

“You are fifty—”

“Do not finish that sentence.”

Her name was Allison Grant.

Forty-eight.

Corporate mediator.

Widowed.

No relationship to Caruso Holdings.

No interest in marrying quickly.

That last part relieved Rocco enough to make him suspicious.

Noah noticed eventually.

“You date.”

Rocco nearly choked on coffee.

“How?”

“You smile phone.”

“I smile frequently.”

“No.”

“Rude.”

Noah became serious.

“Does she know Victoria?”

“She knows what happened.”

“Does she know me?”

“She knows I have a son.”

“My hearing?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Rocco froze.

Noah saw it.

“Did you tell like problem?”

“No.”

“What exactly?”

“That you have hearing loss and use hearing aids and sign language.”

“Why need tell?”

Fair question.

Rocco examined his own instinct.

For years, introducing Noah had included briefing adults.

Devices.

Communication.

Medical background.

What not to touch.

How to speak.

Necessary when he was three.

Less necessary at sixteen.

“I thought it was relevant.”

“Would you tell her I wear glasses?”

“You don’t.”

“You know point.”

Rocco sighed.

“Yes.”

Noah smiled.

“Growth.”

He had stolen Maria’s word.

Noah met Allison at a restaurant.

No engagement party.

No estate.

No symbolic family dinner.

She asked Noah whether he preferred spoken conversation, sign, or both.

He answered:

“Depends.”

She nodded.

No inspirational response.

No remark about how well he spoke.

No praise for overcoming anything.

Halfway through dinner, one hearing aid produced a feedback whistle.

Allison paused.

Noah adjusted it.

Conversation continued.

Later:

“She normal.”

Rocco looked offended.

“That is your review?”

“Yes.”

“You approve?”

“I don’t approve girlfriends.”

Rocco stared.

Noah smiled.

“You taught me.”

A year passed.

Allison came to the estate.

Maria liked her.

That frightened Rocco more than Noah’s opinion.

Noah remained cautious.

Not because Allison behaved badly.

Because he remembered Victoria had behaved well for eighteen months.

Rocco understood.

He did not pressure him to trust faster.

Allison understood too.

One evening Noah told her directly:

“I’m not looking for mom.”

She answered:

“I’m not applying.”

That helped.

Rocco eventually proposed.

Privately.

No reception.

Allison said yes.

Then said:

“We need to discuss estate planning before anyone orders flowers.”

Rocco laughed so hard she became offended.

He explained later.

Evelyn handled the prenuptial agreement.

Strict.

Clear.

Allison retained her assets.

Received defined marital protections.

No authority over Noah’s trust.

No assumption of parental role.

No hidden continuity memorandum.

She read every page.

Then asked Noah whether he wanted to know the provisions involving him.

Rocco almost answered.

Stopped.

Noah said:

“Yes.”

Evelyn explained them.

Noah asked questions.

Then:

“Good.”

No one asked him to bless the marriage.

Noah attended because he wanted to.

At the ceremony, he signed:

DON’T MESS IT UP.

Rocco signed back:

May you like

VERY MOVING.

For the first time, a woman entered the Caruso family without needing legal power over Noah to prove she belonged there.
